Couple of questions.
What are land prices like in your state, away from the coast.?
Can I possess a AR 15 Post Ban with a 30 rd. mag in your state without going to jail?

Your state looks great, by the way.
Hunting, fishing the whole atmosphere.

Up here in MAINE we can pretty much get any firearm legally for sale anywhere else in the country, and we can open carry as well.

We've been searching home/land prices for about four months now and I'm convinced we'll be able to retire up there.  I'd recommend that you pick an area like Cumberland or Kennebunk or Lincoln and then just do a Google search for homes for sale.  Some of them will come up with a realtor attached.  That's fine.  They all have search engines tuned to that area and once a week will send you homes for sale in your price range and local.  We're very happy with what we've been presented so much so that we've traveled up to Maine to see some of them over a long weekend.  We're not ready to move just yet but wanted to know what the listing looked like compared to the real thing.  Good luck!

personally, id stay the hell away from cumberland and kennebunk, way to high in the taxes. how far away from the coast are you looking? how far from Portland or Augusta? the farther away from the turnpike, 295, and RT1 you can get the better home/land prices get and the better taxes get.
ive lived in maine my whole life and ill give you an honest opinion on anywhere you want.

I appreciate your input.  We've been looking in the Brunswick/Bath area about 30 mile circumferance.  Let me tell you something about taxes.  I pay over $5k in property taxes for not even 3/4 acre and home.  Looking at ME property taxes makes me feel like I'm getting away with something they're so 'reasonable'.  It's all in the eye of the beholder after all.

Try $8000 plus $1000 sewer fees on 1/10 of an acre and a 100 year old mutli family house.

I'm partial to the Greater Portland area. If you don't have school age kids don't bother with Cumberland. Lots of beautiful land in New Glouster/ Durham/ Poland area.

As an outsider looking in, it appears that Maine has turned the corner regarding their politics.  Sure, there'll always be that MA influence along the borders and maybe in some of the cities like Portland. Virtually all of the people we interacted with during our last visit were very open and friendly.  We have two bumper stickers on our van that clearly identifies us as conservatives and we got lots of positive comments.  Maine people, like so many other New Englanders, are hard working, "just leave me alone" type of characters.  There may be a population of those on assistance due to the terrible job market right now.  Still, Mainers are a lot of entrepeneurs with tons of small businesses every where you look including the service businesses catering to tourists like us.  They know where their bread is buttered for sure.

We like NH.  We visit there a lot.  But there's something about the Maine topography that gets under your skin if you're an outdoors type of person.  It's just gorgeous there and if you need to escape and find some recluse peace someplace, all you have to do is drive about 15 miles and you'll find yourself alone with your own thoughts.

This weekend, however, we're headed to Jamaica Vermont State Park up off of Rt 9 along the West River.  We've camped up there numerous times and this time we've rented one of the Adirondack shelters just to try one out.  We tent camp but I thought I'd treat the wife to something other than our typical screen house.  The fishing has been great there all summer.  I'm looking forward to some trout in the pan for breakfast!

I've lived in Maine all my life.  We've even decided to buy our first house finally.  I don't have any real want to leave.  I've seen the majority of the East Coast and I just love it here.  We can do pretty much as we please.  We live in the Western Maine area where the Deer out populate the people.

Belgrade area.  Close enough to Augusta/Waterville to satisfy my occasional Big Mac fix.  Far enough away that I can sit on my porch and not see a single person (except during snomobile season, there is a trail 1/4 mile away)  We would only consider moving farther into the woods at this point.
