Hey arf.com, I joined a little while ago and have been lurking around to get my info straight. Im not new to guns, (I have a 870 and a .22), but Im new to Ar-15's. I want to build my first one so that I know how everything works and what-not.

I have a few questions though; I have been looking at lowers and I came across something that worried me, on BCM they said that they would not sent lowers to CT? Is this true and why is that? http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Lower-Receiver-Groups-M4-AR15-s/156.htm ( not sure how to embed yet)

Also Im in CT, are there any places that you guys would recommend that have a FFL that I could go through when ordering these parts? Thanks in advance.

First off, welcome

Where in CT?  If in central CT, JoJo's off rt 10 in Southington is best bet for black rifle stuff.  Most folks use them to make their rifles ban-compliant if they do not own a pre-ban receiver.  There are a few other local dealers for this too, but let's figure out what you want first.

G&R Tactical will send BCM lowers to CT FFL's.  Though you will have to configure as ban-compliant yourself before joining the lower to upper half.

The upper you can have sent to your home.  Lowers are lowers for the most part, so if you have difficulty in procuring BCM, pick up something in-spec and inexpensive.  Spike's, Stag, S&W, RRA, etc, etc.

Are you looking to actually build from parts kits, or just join an upper and lower half of your choosing?  What kind of configuration are you looking to build?

Thanks for the welcome! Im from Northeast CT , from a small town you probably havent heard of I was planning on buying a stripped lower, and building it up from there, and your right from what ive read most lowers are all the same. I was planning on building a m4gery or something close to it, but I havent decided on which upper yet. I figured if I start with a lower and build it up from there I can decide a upper after (and I wont have to get "permission" when I buy a upper).

I have only dealt with Hoffmans and NGX and of course Cabelas, so Im happy to know there are other options out there.

edit: I meant to say Northwest

Try riverview in east windsor.  You can get a spikes stripped lower and a daniel defense lower parts kit for about $200.  Not bad considering you can take it home that day and no shipping.  The dd LPK is to notch too.

You'll need a special wrench for the buffer tube / stock extension.  Everything elsse takes basic punches and drivers.  Carefull about springs shooting about the first time. Order your buffer tube, back plate, nut, buffer spring, buffer and tool from BCM.

For M4 completr uppers, BCM 16" lightweight is pretty nice, but the mid length makes a little more sense on a 16" gun.  You can get a complete colt upper half with bolt, sights, etc new in box now too, so consider that.   If on a budget, spikes is pretty damn good too.

Keep us in the loop!

Thanks dan for all the info- you guys are really helping me out with all this stuff-I'll have to look into that shop on one of my days off. I would love to get at least a lower and lower parts kit before I have to go back to shcool in the end of august.

And no I cant say that I am fully up to speed, I know there are barrel length specifications, but as a whole Im not fully up to date with all of them. This would be my first "assault weapon".

There is a good tacked thread at the top with all the details.

The quick and dirty of it is as follows:
No folding or collapsable stocks
No bayonet lugs
No flash hiders
No threaded barrels.

The collapsable stocks can be pinned in one position
You can run compensator instead of flash hider.  Minor difference
Compensators can be blind pinned to a threaded barrel
Bayo lugs can get machined off.

Again, jojos will do everything professionally for $100 -$150 including the price of the compensator. Do not join a lower and upper until this is done.

The way around all of this cosmetic dickery is to get a pre ban, non colt lower.  That is a whole nother can of worms, so let get you straight with post ban first.

Trust me, for most folks, a preban is kind of pointless as the majority of the ban features are lame like bayonets.  But for others, it makes all the difference in the word.  For a first carbine, ban compliant post ban is usually best.

Ok well I was just reading that tacked thread above and Im happy you put it in plain english for me to understand. And I agree for my first AR I will be going with a post ban compliant, I dont think I have the money for a pre-ban setup right now And that sounds like a pretty good deal at JoJo's. Im sorry if Im beating a dead horse, but if I get a stripped lower and build it; most of these "evil" features are one the upper, right?

Yes.

Only ban feature on lower half is the butt stock.

No worries.  We all have a stake in new guys having good knowlege, good equipment, and a good understanding of how to navigate our ridiculous gun laws.

well I appreciate the knowledge- I actually had no idea this state was this bad when it comes to gun laws I guess thats because most my experience was with shotguns and rifles.

Hey, Im not sure if youd be willing to switch from the bcm lower but a place in torrington-tactical arms, had stag lowers a few months ago for 100 bucks even.  I bought mine in april i think so I dont know if they still have em for that price but its worth checking into.  Thats the only pain in the ass part to get(if you call that a pita lol).  I built my first ar in april and am ready to start my next now lol so be aware that its addicting too! Also if you need any help I'm in simsbury, and good luck with the build!
