What is the going price of the mini 14 Back to the OP question. Keep in mind that Mini's, especially the older ones are not super accurate. The old joke was the Mini 14 had minute of barn accuracy. Meaning you could hit the barn while standing inside it.
That being said go for a Mini-14 with a heaver barrel (the newer ones have them I think) and the accuracy should be better than the older models. For 100 yards or less my mid 80's vintage Mini 14 is acceptable with a 3x9x40 cheep scope on it. As for the price, their price for new will be close to what a bottom of the line AR will run, and the magazines are generally more expensive than AR magazines and they are sometimes harder to find. During the fed ban years Mini 14's were a good deal compared to AR prices, now days not so much. The Mini-14 was one of the first rifles my father gave me, I'll never part with it (unless I absolutely have to). I love the thing despite its few short comings which includes a smoking stock when the barrel gets hot under sustained firing. The one real plus with the firearm in its basic stock configuration is you could have a flash hider on it and not violate the CT AWB. |

That means you can have a folding stock too A pre-ban mini-14 is one of the few pre-ban firearms that are not only readily avaliable, but also fairly inexpensive. Wondering if mini-30's ever were made before the ban? |

Wondering if mini-30's ever were made before the ban? Forgot about the folding stock on a non Mini-14/5F. The "Ruger Mini-14/5F folding stock model only" is banned by name unfortunately. According to Wikipedia the Mini 30 was introduced in 1987... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_Mini-14#Other_calibers In 1987, Ruger began production of the Mini Thirty. The Mini Thirty is chambered for the Russian 7.62x39mm cartridge, used in the SKS and AK-47, as many states prohibit hunting of deer with calibers smaller than 6 mm (.243 in). The 7.62x39 mm has similar ballistics to the well-known .30-30 Winchester. The Mini Thirty was only available as a Ranch Rifle, with integral scope base. Current production Mini Thirtys are similar to Mini-14's except for caliber. The Mini-30 is available with a 16.12" or 18.50" barrel, with a twist rate of 1:10" RH.[11]
Some day (if I win the lotto) I'd like to by a Thirty. Sort of my way of giving a silent F-U to CT (if I'm still living here) for banning the AK-47 type chambered for 7.62x39.

Very true! I had a Mini 14, spent a fair amount of time and $$ trying to make it more accurate. Then I got an AR, and the Mini 14 went away pretty quickly. I got tired of trying to make it into something it's not. Was this by chance one of the older ones with the thinner barrel? |
| It was an older one, not sure how "thin" the barrel was. I added an accustrut with some improvement. In fairness, if I'd have been willing to spend the cost of a decent AR on upgrading the Mini, my results would probably have been better. It was just too much work to get to the reliability and accuracy of, well, a decent AR. I am NOT a rifle guy, and only have/want 1 rifle, the Mini ended up not being the best choice for me. It is very possibly the right choice for others, sorry to have been so negative about what turned out to be my bad decision. |
