| when i have an empty magazine in and i pull back on the charging handle, the bolt stays open...so my question is, is it ok to hit the bolt catch and slam the bolt forward, or is this something i shouldn't be doing? I know dry firing is ok but i dont know if this is. Thanks |

I would not do it regulalrly or as a habit but over all it wont hurt anything. Simply pull the charging handle back and lower the bolt. so once the bolt is back how do i lower the bolt without hitting the bolt catch (this is also my question) Remove the magazine, no need to close the bolt on an empty magazine. If you're looking to dry fire for practice you can pull the bolt back far enough to cock the hammer without hitting the mag catch. |

Though...it makes no difference unless you're trying not to wake someone. ...Spend some time with the weapon bud... ETA: Posted later than the updated thread. |

whoops i just take the mag out
thanks though at least i know now its not a bad thing to do I will go far as to say you do not want to get in the habit of riding the bolt home with the charging handle. Doing so with live ammo could cause a FTF (failure to fire). Letting the bolt slam home by hitting the bolt catch or pulling back and releasing the charging handle is the most reliable method for loading the rifle and you should get in that habit. ETA: This may help clear some things up: Operating the M16 |

It's only bad to do if you got a finger stuck in there...... And if some how you wear out your upper receiver we will teach you how to swap it out....... To not piss off your sleeping dog, just ride the bolt down with the charging handle. Then the slap won't happen...... |

I know dry firing is ok... Figured I'd toss this some what off topic comment out in case someone is using an AR .22 kit/upper/BCG. Rimfire + Dry Fire = Bad.
Busted more than one .22 firing pin many moons ago because no one told me doing dry firing with rimfires can damage/break the firing pin. |

Let us know what area of the state you're in and I'm sure somebody will volunteer. This. In the meantime, don't read field manuals or any other sort of USGI instructions, and especially don't take advice from anyone wearing yellow shooting glasses. |
