| Anybody belong to a club that doesn't enforce the saftey rules equally? By this I mean a club that has range officers who have no problem making rude/sarcastic remarks about other members on the range , while allowing thier buddies to work the actions of thier guns and stand in front of the firing line handling thier guns while other shooters are down range at a cease fire. This is the type of behavior that gives all of us a bad name. I was made a range officer and was told to basically shut up when I tried to enforce the SAFTEY RULES at my soon to be X local gun club because" this guy knew that guy".Are there any clubs that do not tolerate this type of BS?If so please let me know. I want to belong to a club were everyone is held to the same saftey standards , not an exclusive one were unsafe practices are tolerated due to who you know. Thanks |

no offense to VLODPG, but i think most of the other ROs at highrock are douchebags. i severly dislike going there, but its the cheapest and closest around. VLODPG never mentioned Highrock, I did. Some of the RO's can be a pain but most are not. Overall, safety is first! Its a pain in the ass to watch people that have no idea of what they are doing, handle a loaded firearm with no concern for where the muzzle points! I have seen people shoot 9mm out of a .40 , try and make .308 fit in a 30-06 ! believe me, being a RO is not all its cracked up to be! you lose your patience rather quickly |

when i read this i seriously thought the OP was being sarcastic about highrock |

I never heard of this. I belong to Bristol fish and game and Bell city rifle club. This wouldn't happen over there. Somebody would be shown off the property. Bell City wants you to use chamber flags on a cease fire too.
I try to avoid people at shooting ranges. I go at weird times or scope out both to see which one is more quiet. This way I never see a range officer, and that is OK in my book. When you shoot with to many people around you, the gun blasts become distracting. I rather be alone. Sometimes personalities clash too. Bristol fish does not allow visitors. They are trying to fix the BS from non paying members. In my travels, I found pistol shooters to be a better grade of people. Rifle owners tend to be less experienced and have something to show off. "Look at me, I have a weapon"! Wow, I never saw a 308 before....
Trust me, find weird times to go shoot. It's safer and much more fun!! |

My comments had nothing to do with location and everything to do with vague generalizations. Living in NH you most likely have a better grade of people. Your not as populated which is a big plus. Hell, you can't leave anything on your front lawn over night because it will be gone my morning. When your around welfare, many different ethnic groups, well I'm sure you can understand what's it like here in little ole CT. Here are a couple copy & pastes of my earlier posts on a topic similar . Private range at the rifle range. As I approach the line 2 fat dudes sitting to the right. I set up my gear on their left. They seen me walk over. I must have sat there for 2 days before I walked over and asked to go forward to set up a target @ 50 yrds. With a huff they allowed me to go up and set up a target. Being a new unfired Marlin with open sights, I like to add additional paper on the backer board the first time, just incase the sights are off. This helps me zero and find my hits on paper. When I returned, one fat dude was helling that to his buddy "this ought to be good" referring to me adding extra white paper on the backer board. I fired 5 shots with perhaps a 1 1/2 group centered on target. I was so freaking impressed with my self, I didn't fire any more as I didn't want to spoil the group. I again asked to go forward, removed the target and layed it on the ass holes bench. Have a nice day I said and walked off. They didn't say a word. another one....... 16 years ago my dad was dying and had a few days to live. He's been in the hospital for a while. He was a WWII vet and I admired his war stories. Well, 2 days before he died, I needed to let off some steam, and grabbed the M1 in the gun safe. I wanted to shoot the hell out of it in his honor. I needed to phase out and get away from that damn hospital. I'm a member of a private club. It was around pre hunting season, the range was very busy. I waited for a bench to open up, and set up the rifle. Then I waited for a cease fire to go forward to set up a few paper targets. When we got the range is hot signal, I started shooting, a jerk to my right was talking with a buddy. The M1 Garand was loud and he couldn't talk to his buddy over my shots. He gave me a ration of BS about my cases hitting on top of his bench. I apologized and unscrewed the gas plug and continued shooting the rifle, now working the bolt at if it was a bolt action. The cases were not being thrown to his bench any longer. He was not satisfied and started kicking cases on the floor around the bench at me to try to intimidate me. He wanted me to leave. Long story short, I wasn't in the mood and we almost got into a brawl. I was in damn good shape back then. It turned out to be 2 against one and they blinked first and left. I had back up and thanked the ones who had my back. This problem I learned later was brought up at the next board meeting and changes where brought forth. I have a few more, but I encounter them more on the rifle range. I don't know why but it is what it is. |
|
I have a minute before I go to my wonderful job........2 more...
Same club at the rifle range. 4-5 other shooters at the line. They called a ceasefire and I went up to restaple another target. Well as luck would have it, the stapler was out. I hurried back to my spot on the line, reached into my bag and hurried back out to fix the target. I NEVER WENT ON THE BENCH SIDE of the shooting line. I was in the dirt the whole time. When I returned I got yelled at because I could have been shot. I firmly said "I never called all clear or I never walked back to my stool" he backed down. another one 2 months ago. I was the only one there. Sitting with bolt gun with bipod. A guy approached me and said you are not shooting proper at the bench. You need to sit more forward in the bench cut out. If I sit proper, the bipod legs would be hanging over the bench.....Another know it all with the rules memorized in his tiny brain.
These are some of my experiences and why I choose to shoot at weird times and prefer to alone if possible. Other people I encounter are polite and are well received. I sure don't mind these folks! |

There are some good people at the HRSA (they post here too)& I try to do my required time when they are working. It makes the time go by faster. I would be intrested in the OP to do tell about the range in question! |
|
Only excellent experiences at HRSA here with one exception of one guy, and I stress one time. So much ranting and raving about nothing that he wasn't watching the line. That made me uncomfortable enough to want to pack it in for the day, but his shift ended, and the usual keen and aware RSOs showed up. Everybody has bad days I suppose. |

As a former HRSA board member and current NRA certified RSO, I must take exception to your generalization. If you can point out specific instances, fine. Otherwise you have lumped almost 100 dedicated people into your self-defined classification. As I tell students during the NRA Basic Pistol course, attitude is most important, and frankly, you have a poor attitude. If you truly "dislike going there", please do us a favor and take your business elsewhere. We often have a waiting list for people who want to shoot at our range. Perhaps you can find a range where the ROs aren't douchebags (your opinion). We just completed a Women On Target shooting clinic where 45 women shooters were introduced to the shooting sports or had their past shooting experience reinforced. All we heard were positive comments from the participants. I do recommend that before you make such a generalization in the future, you walk the walk, first. Perhaps you are one of the shooters who failed to keep the muzzle pointed down range and ventilated our range roof. Or "racked the slide" while pointing the muzzle at your neighbor. Or many other unsafe actions. Let me apologize in advance, but if a shooter is exhibiting unsafe shooting practice, it will be stopped and corrected. If the offense is particularly egregious, you will be asked to leave. We typically have 4-5 RSOs on duty to cover 16 shooting ports. I don't think any other range has that level of coverage. The majority of our RSOs are NRA certified and all go through a refresher course each January. |

snip snip i didnt want to get back into this thread but here it goes. ken trust me, you are one of the good guys. let it be known i havent been to highrock for two months but most of the times i go there, there are always older, crotchety guys swearing up a storm, breaking everyones balls (not being a dick while enforcing rules, but very rude and unnecessary comments). im sorry that i've rolled everyone at highrock together and that was not my intention. |
