Just the basics, whats involved to get a suppressor in CT? I am thinking about a large bore precision rifle (bolt action .408) and like the idea of having a can on it. What are everyones' experiences. Probably order something this time next year.

Figure out what type of rifle. Pick a can. Call your local dealer. Order the can. When it arrives at dealers, fill out form 4 paperwork. Get police chief sign off. Get finger prints. Mail all of the above to ATF with a check for $200. Wait 4-5 months and pick up paperwork and can from dealer. If barrel needs threading, have this done during the 4-5 month wait.

Thats pretty much the process. Any questions?

buzz!
we have a winner!

CT doesn't have any restrictions on suppressors above and beyond what the federal government requires.

Do remember that (not that it matters if it is going on a bolt action) it is a flash suppressor as well as a sound suppressor, so it is an evil feature on semiautos

Thanks guys, was my thoughts from going through the evil features process two years ago on my JP. Was unsure though and figured if it was something really involved should get a start. As for threading, the rifle I am looking at comes with an Opsinc suppressor that quick attaches via an adapter on the brake supposedly.

Where in CT would you even shoot a 408?

LOL, oh so nowhere.

Guns like those are a waste at 100 yards which is about all you'll find in CT

If you use an LLC, Corp or Trust you can skip the sign-off, prints, and photos.  You just deal with your FFL and the BATF.  More expensive way of doing it but you never have to deal with a CLEO.

While a silencer was a flash hider for the purposes of the federal AWB, I have read here and other places that CT may not consider a silencer a flash hider in and of its self.  Anyone have any idea one way or the other?

CT has no definition for a silencer.  I err on the side of caution in this case.

Private property (hayfields/cornfields) here and possibly VT good for 500-1000 yds, hardest thing is safe backstops. Possibly my current range which is 400yds, see below. Then to truely stretch its legs travel out to places like Thundervalley in Ohio. There is also a 1000 yd range up by Albany that I believe will allow these heavy cartridges.
Just starting my thought process at this point other cartridges I'm considering besides the .408 are the .375 and the Lapua .338, which both open doors as far as ranges that will allow them. The range I currently shoot at doesn't allow the .50 because its muzzle energy exceeds the design of the range but I believe the .408 is under the threshold. Like I said just starting to think about my next big purchase, I know how loud a 300 mag can be and didn't want something even louder unsuppressed. They say some of the .50s make you sick just from the sound pressure, not something I need to experience.

I don't know about that. I've owned a 50 for about 10 years and all it's done was put a huge smile on my face. But it is becoming more difficult to find a place to shoot it. I was just in New Mexico last week for the FCSA World Championship. The NRA Whittington center is a beautiful place/range.
