| Going to take the wife out on her first camping trip soon and I was looking at places in CT. There are quite a few to choose from but many are very cookie cutter looking to me and don't give the full outdoor feel. I am looking particularly at Pachaug State Forest in Voluntown and was hoping some one has stayed there or knows someone who has and can give an opinion on it and a little insight. |

Can't help you, but wanted to mention it is illegal to carry a gun in a state park or forest. Just a heads up. No it's not. A more accurate statement would be to say: "It's illegal to carry a gun in a state forest when not hunting a particular species in season, within state forest boundaries". With the proper (legal) hunting implement, of course. I hunt Natchaug State Forest quite often. Know the park ranger on a first name basis! In Pachaug It is legal for the public to hunt Spring Turkey, Small game, waterfowl, Fall Archery Deer/Turkey, Fall Firearms Turkey, Muzzleloader Deer, and No Lottery Deer. -Gary |

I stayed there in the late fall with the g/f (after much arm twisting :)).
Nice little place (aside from other people who were there blasting music or up until all hours being loud...). Depending on which site you get, you may be staring at your neighbors as the sites are kinda close together and open, though some have more cover than others. There were toilets there (pretty clean) and pump water available, as well. A few nice hiking trails as well up some nearby ridges, that was a good time (a fair amount of elevation if you feel like it). I forget which area I was staying at, though (think there are two different camp areas if I recall correctly). It is definitely "out there" enough off the roads to have a camp feeling to it. I wouldn't put it as my first choice when comparing to some other favorites (like American Legion campground in Barkhamsted), but I still enjoyed it there. I would definitely consider going back again. As I was also there off-season with nobody nearby, a folding knife didn't cut it for me (pardon the pun). |
| Yeah I am up to date on the no carry policy in state parks/forests unfortunately. I was looking to stay at the Mt. Misery sight, it looked more secluded than the other one. They call that sight "backpack camping" so I was hoping that would mean not having to see other campers. I was looking at the American Legion one as well, what did you like better about that one? I was out of the loop from regular society for the past 10 years or so but man what happened to just going out into the woods setting up camp and making a fire? That's what I am looking for a place where I won't be bothered with the real world for a couple of days. |

There is a trail road that goes thru, so it's not a 'backpack only' to get to a site...there may be those too though? American legion had a few more densely wooded sites, plus it was right next to a river...nothing better than getting there early to get a riverside site :). My father took me there when I was younger too so there's a bit of nostalgia there for me as well. |
