Ok, this officially sucks. I have been out of work since July before I left my previous job to go to my guard AT and Was gone to Fort Drum for about 3 1/2 weeks. Well now I am out of a job and have been shooting off resume's constantly and can't find work worth a damn. I have been trying Craigslist, monster, and local contacts but there just don't seem to be any jobs around that want me. I can't figure out why I seem to be so undesirable int he job market, I have some excellent references with major international corporations, I have some limited military experience and office experience as well. It just baffles me that I can't find work and it's really killing me.

I recently dropped my active duty Army commission for a number of personal reasons, the biggest of which is I have absolutely no desire to spend the 4 or more years as an Ordnance officer. I love the Army but that is not how I want to spend my career and end up hating the military. While I realise this seems like many to be a very poor choice, for me it was the right thing to do. I am staying enlisted in my guard unit which I love. I knew from the get go that I was losing a whole hell of a lot more than I was gaining but I didn't think it would take so long to find a job.

I've applied for such menial things as office administrative work, a secretary, I've done that job before for a major corporation and it was actually a pretty decent gig for what it was. I've sent resume's in to Sikorsky as well since I figured the fact I already have a secret security clearance would help but apparently not. I have bills piling up and no prospect of employment in my future... again, this sucks... Anyone else feeling the hurt of the current economy in their job hunt?

Steve

And I thought I was the only one.  I graduated last spring from an Ivy league school with an honors degree and can't get my foot in the door anywhere.  I've fired off my resume to a lot of places but haven't had any major bites.

Yeah, that whole college degree seems like a waste of the last five years of my life about now...

I know a few people that have gotten in to Sikorsky's, you just need to keep trying on their web site sikorskycareers.com. I tried a bunch of times myself with no luck. I think Kimberly Clark in New Milford is hiring if you're looking for blue collar work.

Does your fab shop have any laser cutting needs that it would be interested in subbing out?

I've applied to a few financial services positions in Stamford but they all require at least 1-2 years of experience.

Are you new to the work force or just trying to break into the industry?

I am not an aircraft mechanic, MP actually. I just figured my security clearance would give me a leg up in that kind of industry. At this point, I am looking for anything.

I feel for you on the job search and on making a move in the army for the better.

I was in the similar boat back in 2002.  The computer market tanked shortly after 11 Sep.  I couldn't find any stable jobs or consulting work.  I collected unemployment and accumulated tons of debt in those 9months.

After working a few dead end jobs, I finally landed my current job.  My company supplies 98% of the products McDs uses/sells.  I've been with the company for over 4yrs now.  I make what I was making in computers, but have access to overtime whenever I need it.  This past year, I've finally returned to pre-unemployment stability.

I also gave up on the Army reserves in 1998, giving up my chance to become a NCO.  I was tried of the lacking discipline, lack of quality leadership, lack of training, respect and laziness I experienced in my unit.  I miss alot of fun I had in the military, but it was worth the dread I felt every drill weekend.

You have tough it out, doing your best to avoid gaining more debt.

The computer market was starting to tank well before 9/11. I lost my job in November of that year due to the tech market falling off. And to think I left my job of 12 years in February of that same year to get in to the tech industry

You should have looked into the guard, from what I understand it's alot different than the reserves, but again alot of that is unit/MOS dependent, I am a 31B MP and wouldn't give it up for anything right now. If you miss it, you should consider looking at teh guard and getting back in, drop me a line if you are interested, i might be able to help you out.
A friend and fellow ARFCOMer hooked me up with a job opportunity, I went and interviewed and so far so good. Right now it looks good, I REALLY want this job so I hope it works out. Wish me luck, and to everyone else, best of luck guys, this sucks.
