I believe I cant sell a gun to a NY resident in a CT FTF deal, correct? However I can bring it to a local gun shop and they can transfer it to them. I am trying to avoid shipping it, as I really dont want to be bothered with the possable headache. Any input would be great.

Not sure, but I've always been told, if the buyer is not from CT, ship it or do an FFL transfer and let them pay for it.

You definitely can not  do a FTF deal with an out of state resident. You can I believe transfer it to an instate FFL who could then transfer it to the buyer, but the delivery of the long gun to the buyer must happen at the FFLs place of business. (Refer to Us Code Title 18 Section 922.)
I would make sure your FFL is cool with this before proceeding.

I thought that you had to send it to an FFL in the buyers state because he cannot take it accross state lines on his own?

Nah, if he wants to pick it up in person, have him meet you and the rifle at the FFL and let the FFL do the transfer.
I picked up a rifle like that in PA long time ago.

It would probably be best to meet at a NYS dealer- unless he has a Connecticut Carry Permit (or one of the other exemptors ie. CT Hunting License, Military ID)  he will get stuck haveing to come back to Connecticut in 2 weeks.
