I have been asked to guage interest in a pro gun, PROACTIVE rally for Connecticut.

There are contacts I can leverage in the industry who might help fund it IF we can show a commitment to turnout. They will NOT fund it if we can't show a solid commitment - I am talking about thousand or more people, not just a few dozen waving signs.

A similar rally will take place in TN on April 29th. sponsored by GOA.

I'm open to ideas, suggestions, we need commitment from people, pro gun legislators, possibly a pro gun celebrity to be a "hook" to attract crowds, etc.

email me at: [email protected] if you are interested. And spread the word. This is an idea in the planning stages at this point.

The plan is to surprise the anti gunners with a PROACTIVE rally during an election season that isn't simply a knee jerk REACTION to anti gun legislation being proposed.  It is meant to increase the traction and gain momentum with the small victory we had last month beating back the ammo serialization (de facto ban) and firearm microstamping bills.  We can't just sit back and wait for the next time they want to hit us over the head with a gun bill.

Let's leverage the momentum we have now!

Steve, these types of resources would be better marshaled in early 2009, not now.

2008 is more or less over (aside from a complete wild turkey surprise during a special session...which is highly unlikely), so using all this capital to rally for an issue that is essentially dead for now doesn't seem to be the best use of this tactic.

We will be fending off hordes of anti-gun bills starting in January. It's going to be a brutal session then. My vote is we wait and pull out all the stops ourselves...at that time.

ETA: REMEMBER, if you choose to hold this rally in late summer...after the ticker tape is picked up and everybody is home for supper another FIVE months will pass until the legislature convenes again. If the concept of a rally is for the benefit of people running for the senate or assembly a rally in Hartford will give them ZERO boost. However, a bunch of smaller rallies in their home districts will actually pay dividends to the individual candidates themselves.

Again, I'm a little mystified as to why we'd all travel to Hartford for a big rally in the name of "momentum" when anything we might gain (and I don't think we'd gain much at all) is then lost by five more months of political issue wasteland.

My recommendation is for smaller rallies in candidate's home districts and save the big one for January.

But, do what you wish. At least you've got your foot on the gas pedal.

True. However, we're toying with the idea of being Proactive versus Reactive.

The goal being capturing some commitment from the largely Republican underticket that can win state representative and state senate seats in certain districts, and hopefully tilt certain committee memberships more in our favor come January.

i'm interested. steve, do you have a mailing list that you can add me to?

I'd show up and can get some friends to also.  I think a mailing list is a good idea.  Organization is what will make this successful but you already know that.

Here's a look at what the other side did this past week....

email me at: [email protected] to join my distribution list

Last month, we banded together and beat back (for now) the attempts to ban our ammo through "serialization" and ban our handguns through "microstamping"

Let's keep the momentum going

If we do one at all, it will probably be late summer for a variety of strategic reasons

1. Heller decision from SCOTUS - if the ultimate decision is in our favor (and early comments seem to point that way) - we need to create buzz to run with it, because the media won't cover it if it favors us.

2. Pro gun local/state candidates begin their campaign season

3. Good weather & long daylight hours

count me in for any events.

my fingers and voice are sore from protesting that last round of nuttiness (ammo serialization and microstamping).  even arranged a sick day to testify before the judiciary committee (didn't end up going based on the # of people signed up).

i live on the gold coast and am blessed to have a G.A. rep who is solidly pro-gun (state senator, that's another story )  .  my rep has indicated to me that the forthcoming Heller SCOTUS decision is indeed on the minds of the legislature.

i'd love for us to roll back some of this crazy legislation (AWB I and II for starters).
