No, you don't have to carry a letter, but it's also an extra "good to have" because if some uninformed LEO sees it and calls you out on it - it'll be a pain. I walk around with a copy of my "certificate of possession" for assault weapon for my two, registered SAR-1s in 7.62 since they are AK look alikes, tucked into my wallet behind my pistol permit in case that happens. I was once called out on a range by an uninformed police officer (name and town I will not mention) who was practicing with his pistol when I showed up with my NAKED barrel Bushmaster CMP match rifle and told me "hey, you can't have them - them are banned" (literally, that was his grammar!) Luckily for me another officer from that same town was also there who was a real shooter, knew the law and set him straight. Seriously, if you get in a car accident, or police come to your home for any reason, and they see that AR clone; you don't know if you're dealing with a 15 year veteran who probably is also an NRA Life member and owns the same guns himself and knows the laws, or some 1 yr rookie who they hired because he/she fit the profile of the "new world order" police officer who doesn't shoot, outside of qualification and has the modern "social worker" liberal mentality, you can get called out and the gun can be turned over for tracing to determine if it is illegal or not. This happened in Bridgeport when a former millionaire businessman gone bankrupt skipped town, owed the city gazillions and the city took possession of his office near Sikorsky Memorial Airport. They torched open his gun safes and pulled out a variety of guns, the first one being an RWS Diana air rifle with a scope pictured in the CT Post along with the text: "a black and brown shiny assault weapon was pulled from the safe" and they will run "tests" to confirm if any of the guns are illegal. |

well what a mess!!! I have seen ak clones for sale in ct gun shops not a lot... now they fall through the ban because they are 5.45x39or 5.56/223 not 7.62x39 orig ak-47 round ... but they look just like any ak-47... you wouldn't need any Cert. of Possesion for these because there is none needed... but if you were challenged how could you pleed your case? does every police officer know that 5.45x39 ak-74 clones in post ban config are ok in ct.. that is what scares me about the way gun laws are written in ct ...nothing is clear and you get 15 different answers to one question... thanks for the input one big mess |

Exactly why Bob Crook has been suggesting that the entire law be scrapped. It's an embarassment even to its supporters. Your point well taken, please note there is NO STATUTORY DEFINITION of an AK TYPE. Today it means an AK look alike only in 7.62x39 Tomorrow it could mean an M-1 Garand, a Remington 1100, or a Ruger 10/22 There is no standard, there is no legal definition it is totally open to interpretation and that's the courts' job - not law enforcement's |
