Ok here is a question for the LE guys in CT.  If a police agency signs off on it can an officer direct purchase from colt and not be breaking the AW law?  Another words the agency is providing the letterhead and assuming responsibility for the officers purchase.  Had to ask this when in a recent discussion it was presented to me and I have no idea just says that officers can't personally purchase does not clarify if the officer has permission from his agency to make pruchase through the agency.  I personally don' t think it is allowed, but could be a loophole.  Unfortunately DPS sits in an ivory tower guarded by the great panzy Blumenthal and loves it dictatorship over us lowly peasants.

It is my experience that the Colt sells the weapon to the Department even if the officer pays for it. Therefore the weapon is officially the Department's and just being used by the individual officer for official duty only. The weapon cannot be transferred to the officer upon leaving the department or retiring under unlike the old federal law which allowed transfer of the weapon upon retirement from a department.

Of course I could be wrong as these laws are difficult to interpret.

Sorry - there's no way around it.

Individual police officers cannot go out and get their own rifles on the ban list.

The department letterhead deal is for DEPARTMENT or AGENCY purchase for issuance to those officers using the rifle(s) in the course of their official duties.

Police officers themselves are subject to the same laws, rules and regs re: banned "assault weapons" as the rest of us are.

My best friend is a cop in a large, CT city and that's the way it is.

About 15 years ago, there was a chief in the town of Madison, CT, I believe, who was found to have bought and sold machine guns under department letterhead. That came out in the wash after he was audited for having bought new tires for his wife's car and fencing for his
yard with department funds.

I had a preban non Colt for sale and got a call from a retired State (CT) Cop that I could not sell an AR with a FS and Collapsible stock in CT cause he had a Duty Rifle that they wouldn't let him Keep when he retired.

Eventually, after trying to educate him on the AWB he told me his duty rifle was a Colt and after trying to explain the "list" and "preban" and that he had a Colt which was on the "list" I HUNG UP.

I guess he was due for retirement.

So, based on the fact that cops ARE NOT above the law and the law says you can't have Colts, you can't have Colts.

I don't know the CT Laws

But in MA you could purchase it as a LEO as long as your department allows you to carry POW for duty and that is the weapon your department uses or authorizes, so as to have you qualify and carry a weapon that is sighted to you so as to make it an effective tool to be used for duty.  Now when you reitre from that LEO job and still reside in that state you will then be subject to the laws of concerning ownership which would probably mean you'd need to sell it to someone in a state who could legally own it.

Boy I wish I lived in another state!!!!

Another words the agency is providing the letterhead and assuming responsibility for the officers purchase.

Section 53-202 CGS says that departments can buy them and issue them out, but individual officers can't purchase them, even if for official use.

I was trying to educate him on the laws he should know already. He was very stubborn and I did eventually end the converstion but I didn't want to just hang up.
