Regaring pistol permits, how long did you have to wait for the local PD to process your paperwork and send your your temporary permit and how long was it for the state police to send out your permanent permit?  What have been your personal experiences?

Mine took about 7 or 8 weeks.  I didn't get a temp in the mean time.

mine took 55 days. I picked up the temp state permit at the local pd, and immediately drove to the Vernon State Police barracks and got my permanent state permit.

so it took 55 days for the state police to send you your permit and you had so wait for the local PD to issue a permit?  damn thats lucky.

My NRA Course instructor had said to expect it to take 6 to 8 weeks at the local PD, but mine took only 5 weeks (June 2002)! I didn't complain.

Took the Temp down to the Bridgeport Troop G and got my Permanent State Permit the same day.

no, there is no temp town permit anymore, it's just a temp state permit, but it's issued by your town. once you get the temp state permit, you have to go get the perm state permit. It's a little convoluted but easy enough. BTW, go check out  www.packing.org for details.

???? it's actually easier for a non-resident to get a CT CCW than a resident. And it costs less too.

6 god damn months

But I handed in the application on Sept 10th, so that was the major holdup.

The OP is in CT and is referring to the CT CCW process. I guess he forgot that this is a New England forum, not state-specific!

The world in MA is VERY DIFFERENT!!

Not only is there no "temp permit", I don't know of anyone who has ever received a "receipt" for their application either? That is a "requirement" to get your 90 day grace period, to enforce the 40 day rule, etc. otherwise you can't prove that you really did submit your application within the time required to invoke your legal rights.

My city took 6 weeks to issue my temp permit.  Went to Middletown that day.

I took the NRA course, got fingerprinted and submitted my application. Eight weeks later I got a call that I was approved. I headed to DPS in Middletown that same day.

I'm not sure but I think they have 4 to 8 weeks to approve you. They waited to the last minute of the last hour of the last day for me.

About 8 months since I was deployed half the time and Mass kept kicking my permit back. My Maine LTC took about a week and a half.

My understanding of the law is that 8 weeks is supposed to be the max under current CT law, that is, the local Issuing Authority (Police Chief, or First Selectman for towns with no local police) has to "either issue or deny for reason" by eight weeks. If you get no satisfaction upon contacting the Issuing Authority after 8 weeks, theoretically you can file a complaint with the Firearms Permits Review Board.

I believe the Review Board was set up years ago as a result of beaurocratic abuse which occurred under the old laws which required you to specify a reason for having the permit, and local Chiefs of Police often just stalled the process, or would just outright refuse to respond to applicants inquiring as to the status of their applications. The law was then changed to a "shall issue" type, eight weeks was specified, and the Review Board was set up.

Interestingly, the application forms in some towns appear to be leftovers from the old days, and still have the "Why Needed?" question on them. Even the 5x7 Application Card I filled out at Troop G for the Permanent Permit had the question on it ... I wrote in "For all legal purposes". The clerk noticed I had filled it in, told me I didn't have to answer that question, but I responded that it was a true statement so leave it. He smiled and said OK.

It's funny you mention that!

When my girlfriend was filling out her application just recently, I was looking at the application and noticed the question wasn't on there anymore.  I didn't even know it had been removed.

I don't recall looking for the version date on the card, but the card was somewhat yellowed, so it must have been around for a while. In contrast, although they were using obsolete cards, they took my picture using a digital camera. Go figure.

Good luck on your hearing.
