I know a lot of you are hunters. Ive asked Dan and he's recommended a knife he uses and is helping find me one.

My question is, what kind of hunting knife would you hunters recommend. By hunting knife I mean a good knife to gut a buck with, maybe shank a coyote or hog in the neck if I need to ().

Ive have come across a website that sells knives from around the world and Ive seen some well reviewed USA made knives that are budget priced (<$100). Im trying to gear up for deer season already so I can be good and ready.

i used this Kershaw for years and finally passed it on to my nephew.

it was stupid expensive ($200ish) in the '80's but it was a stout knife.

I've carried a Buck Vanguard Zipper for every hunt I've gone on.  It's a great knife, holds a great edge, has a gut hook and the grip will stick in your hand even when it's soaked with blood or water which is a HUGE plus. It also comes with a much prettier wood grip but the rubber type grip is far more useful.  The only difference in mine and the one in the pic is that mines an anniversary model and came with the special edition 100 year anniversary sheath.  I haven't used it in a loooong time but its what I would use today if I had need.

You can see mine in this pic but I don't have a pic of just it.  The Buck Vanguard Zipper is small enough to be an excellent skinning knife and just big enough to use for any other needs you have in the field.  It's very affordable for the quality and definitely a knife that will last and be able to be handed down.

The Kabar in that pic is an absolutely fantastic knife and my choice for most anything outdoors but it's not a great skinning knife and knife specifically designed for skinning, like the Buck, will make a huge difference.

Are you going to use it for birds and small game, big game, or both?
Do you need a gut hook or saw, or just a general purpose blade?
"Hunting knife" covers a very broad spectrum.

Look at the Blackjack 124 and 125. I own a 124 and love it. Another of my favorites is the Bark River Classic Drop Point Hunter. It's based on a Loveless design and is absolutely perfect for field dressing.

Bark River makes the Blackjack knives as well, very high quality stuff that will last a lifetime.
I usually get mine from either DLT Trading or knivesshipfree.com

There are advantages to having separate gut hook blade and general usage blade.
If you have gutted a large animal you'll know what I mean.

The top one is made from a file that my grandpa had in his tool box that I inherited.  I'll never use it but the model is DDD.  Deer destructive device  Mesquite handles came from a mesquite tree on my old place in South Tejas.
You can still see sign of the file up near the handle

Bush Monkey model -1.  Great all round fixed handle utility knive.  Tough SOB

The Humongous Knife.  Great camp tool

It's tough to beat a Havlon Piranta for gutting. I got one last summer for $20 on Midway. Best $20 I've ever spent on hunting equipment. If you need it to pry anything get something else; however, if you just need it to gut and skin a deer you can't beat it.

If I was going to be able to get into hunting again, I would definitely carry a Piranta.  There's nothing that compares from everything I've seen (other than competitors who have done copied the design of course).  I already have a pink one on my wish list .  Extremely affordable also.

the standard hunting knife is the Buck 110.
like a KaBar- every man should have one.
