just finished watching it, might just be me, but damn the jeff bridges version is pretty damn funny.
liked it more than the john wayne version, course I don't care for john wayne so my view might be a bit biased. the one part of the movie that was squirrely was the dude hanging high in the cotton wood mattie asked "why did they hang him so high in the tree?" rooster "maybe they thought it'd make him more dead" what made it squirrely was what the fuck was the interest in hauling around and trading a dead man, it was traded twice, I understand the part where the dr dude pulls his teeth, but what does he intend to trade the rest of his body for, I guess maybe his skeleton would have trade value for medical study, but what would hauling it around trying to trade it for whatever be of any value to somebody otherwise? other than that conundrum I laughed quite a bit, it was enjoyable to say the least. |

I liked it when he kicked the Indians. I thought I put that in the first post ;
laughed like mad myself at that, little bastard shouldn't been jabbing that mule with a sharp stick like he was; fucking choctaws are kind of dense anyway, besides that smaller one appears to have fisheyes and didn't have enough sence to move when he seen the bigger one get thrown off the porch, also not only does he body slam the bigger of the two, but has to kick his ass off the porch when he walks back out of the building. like I said some pretty funny parts in the movie. |

I do think this new one is better than the original. Strictly because of the scenery. When they were riding through the shinnery by the river, it made me think of the Cimarron and Canadian Rivers. When I think of Oklahoma, it will always be cottonwoods and a sandy river or creek. |

Bought the movie and watched it again tonight.
Jeff Bridges is wearing the patch over his right eye. John Wayne wore it over his left eye. In the shoot out scene at the cabin, Jeff Bridges is shouldering the rifle on the right side. Neat trick when you only have the left eye. I gotta say I do like that movie! |

I gotta say I do like that movie! cause that's how rooster was in the book, the coen bro's flicks based from books are fairly accurate to the book. he shoulders right handed and sights with his left eye, check out the cabin scene where he shoots moon in the leg and again when damon is getting dragged around you see bridges sighting with his left eye. I'm no expert, but the firearms appear to be period correct in the current version also, seen colt saa, winchester 73, henry, sharps (can't tell by the cartridges on damon's belt if it's a 45/70, 45/90 or 45/120 though, hell it could be a 50/110 too ), what appears to be colt 1861 navy conversions, rem model 1875 and a colt dragoon.
in the wayne version he talks of pulling his navy sixes and riding into a 7 man posse, but you never see wayne with a navy model even when he charges into lucky ned's crew, just the plain jane colt saa, also he's got a 92' winchester and the story setting takes place is 1878. in the bridges version he's got a set of what appears to be 1861 navy conversions in saddle holsters and a winchester 73 and mattie has a colt dragoon instead of a walker colt (I think?) like kim darby has in the wayne version which rooster calls a dragoon. the characters in the bridges version reload their firearms also, bridges rooster reloads his pistol when him and mattie are in the rocks above the cabin after he killed quincy, he also pulls rounds out of his pocket and lays them out on the rock for his rifle and lucky ned his remington when he's talking with mattie in his camp. one thing that does look odd about the firearms is they all appear new, they got nice clean finishes, dark blue and case hardened finishes, you'd think that guns worn daily in holsters etc out in the weather would show a great deal of finish wear, hell maybe all the characters in the book all got new guns before heading to the woods |

Guns in westerns should look new. Most are only 5-10 years old at the time. Guns were expensive pieces of equipment and were well taken care of. Also John Wayne used that '92 from 1860 to about 1900. He had it in everything. sure they took care of them, but they were tools to be used and the owner's used them regularly in all weather/terrain conditions too, plus they fired blackpowder ammo, that stuff had to be cleaned after firing, not just because it was corrosive/caused rust, but it'll jam a gun up quick with repeted firings (one of the reasons colt's nickle finish was a big hit with pistol owners cause it cleaned up easier and pit so much, course it wore off too with a lot of use/abuse); although the firearms mechanically worked fine the finish on them got beat up and worn fairly quick. read someplace where colt used to include a screw driver with all it's new pistols sold so the owner could tighten the screws back up, damn near all the firearm manufacturers had the same issue, must be a bit of truth to it because have you ever see an old firearm that was used regularly have screw head/slots that weren't boogered up? since most owners used whatever was handy if they didn't have the proper screwdriver. if you've fired one of the colt saa, winchester, henry or spencer rifle clones you know what I'm talking about, the clone's I've got (cimmeron/uberti colt saa especially) have to have all the screws tighten after 50 rounds or so through them because they've loosened pretty good, the hammer screw the most (don't even have to fire it, just repeted cocking of the hammer will loosen the screw). hell it's not specific to only those, my ruger's vaquero/blackhawks used to have to have the ejector housing screw tighten pretty regular, last time I had to replace one I installed it with a dab of blue loctite, then did the same for the others. and in case you've never seen me type it, I don't care for john wayne |
