Any regulars?

Is there a smart less dangerous way to do it?

I've always wanted to, but the idea of losing a finger or three to a snapping turtle doesn't excite me too much.  If snapping turtles go extinct I'll be out there in a heartbeat.

Dan may know.  He does a form of noodling......he reaches under the bathroom stalls at truck stops!!!

Noodling has always amazed me.  I've never been able to find the true origins of the sport, but I figure it started one of two ways:

1)  "Hey, Bubba, I bet you cain't catch uh fish without a pole!" or
2)  "Hold my beer and watch this!"

Possibly both.  I never took up noodling.  There's something zen about wetting a line, and I just can't imagine getting the same feeling from trying to get a catfish to bite me.

I believe noodling originated with the Natives.

Angling has always been about luck with me.  I enjoy it but I'm not good at it.  To me going into his environment, finding him, then pulling him out with my own arm appeals to me on a primal level.

I went once and was the guy in charge of floating the ice chest.  We found snapping turtles and encountered a lot of snakes.  A fair amount of fish was caught also but I was more concerned with beating the snakes away.
I went fishing on the Washita river today and a 6 foot snake of some kind came down and laid on the bank pretty close to me.  After drinking it swam out in the river and crossed to the other side.  I dont need to float in water like that.

You draw less attention with hand-cranked generators

We're not talking about your favorite occupation or what you swing on in truck stop rest rooms.
Noodling takes 50 lb brass balls to hold you down cuz your head is usually hollow if you like doing it.
I got introduced to noodling as a 21 year old down on the Kerr McClellan, and some on the Cottonwood Creek south of Guthrie.
An old man showed me how to feel them with your feet. He called me over one time and told me to feel the head of this big catfish under a log.
It was BIG. I asked what were we going to do. He told me "We're gonna leave that big bitch alone cuz she'd drown us both."
The only safe way to do is sink barrels and provide structure to noodle the catfish but that is illegal.
Two boys I know up in Crescent get ripped before they noodle. One goes down under and grabs the catfish while the other holds onto his legs.
When he starts kicking his legs, he gets hauled out.
Of course both are stoned so it doesn't hurt.....

just watch the pbs documentary called "Okie noodling", it'll tell you all need to know about the art.

I've noodled a few cats out of the rocks below my house when I was younger and much wiser than I am now, since getting older I've dumbed up quite a bit.

It's worth the trip to Pauls Valley for the Okie Noodler's Festival. I've been twice and enjoyed it each time.
My wife didn't feel like she fit in though.
She told me she stood out like a sore thumb because she didn't have a tattoo, was wearing a bra, and didn't have a beer in her hand.
So I don't guess we'll be going back.
