I got some revenge this evening. Rabiits have been eating my canteloupes. Pulled in the driveway about twilight and there were half a dozen or so out in the yard. Broke out the 10-22 and couldn't hit crap, iv'e knocked the adjustable sight out again. Went back to the safe and grabbed ole faithful( a Stevens crackshot that was my Great uncle's, My Uncle's, Mine, and now my son's). The chamber was shot out and it was getting in rough shape so i had it resleeved  and refinished. It was dead on. I got 3 before the rest split. When i was a kid my uncles always told me not to eat any hares until after first hard freeze. Any truth to this. I tossed em' out in the woods just in case, but i was sure thinkin about some fried rabbit and gravy.

Are you sure you want to talk about shooting rabbits out of season on a public forum?

That old wives tale about not eating before the first freeze refers to botfly larvae commonly found in the skin of a number of small game species during the growing season.

Biologists say they're harmless, but not many folks want to eat a critter that's got grubs living in it's skin.

North Carolina decided to start squirrel season a few weeks later to minimize the wastage of infested animals;  the larvae leave the host to overwinter outside the body.

Cut off their heads, put 'em on a stick, and place in your garden.   Should send a message to the other wabbits.  They should disengage at this point.

Yes it's perfectly legal if varmints are commiting or about to commit depredation.

Except that you have to obtain the depredation permit in advance, and it must be in your possession when you perform the control function.

Title 800:25-37-12
(1)    The Department of Wildlife Conservation (Department) shall create a complaint/permit form, which must be completed and signed by the landowner/lessee and an authorizing Department employee before a permit can be issued.
(2)    If the complaint form is approved, the Department shall issue a nuisance/depredation permit. A copy of the permit must be kept on the person of the permittee and all individuals authorized in writing to help the permittee while conducting nuisance wildlife or feral swine control.
