I'm new to guns. I'm looking at the Smith & Wesson M&P or the Springfield XD, in either a 9mm or .40 cal. It would be used for target/fun shooting. Which one of these do you all think would be better or know of something in the $400-500 range that is possible better? I am thinking there is something about a 3 day wait for purchasing a handgun. Can some one tell me about it. I have a friend that has a Smith & Wesson SIGMA .40 S&W, that is the only handgun that I have shot to compare these too. Also I'm in the Tulsa area, what are some good places to get new guns or is off the web better. |
Welcome. Either handgun will be fine, I prefer the Smith M&P. I believe both can be had in your price range. There is no 3 day wait for a handgun purchase in Oklahoma, if you go through a FFL there will be a NICS check, but that is instant after you fill out the 4473. Cant help with gun shops in the Tulsa area. |
|
I've shot both the M&P and XD in 40, I prefer the XD, but that's just me, both are fine pistols, the M&P was priced quite a bit cheaper last time I looked, I've owned a sigma 9mil jamomatic, put close to 500 rounds through it and it never got any better, so I traded it off, been thinking of getting another 9mil one of these days, probably be an XD. ETA: Welcome, and being a custom of ours, I'll take a case of 223. |
What is NICS and FFL? The 4473, is that a Form that you get from like Academy sports and outdoors? I see both of them at Academy for $500, or do you'll think a gun shop would be better with purchase and service. What about transporting a gun in a car. Can you have ammo in the clip or does it have to be empty. Can the clip have ammo in it, out of the gun, and both be in the same location such as the passenger seat or glove box? |

If it were my money,I'd look at them in this order.... 1)Glock 2)M&P 3)XD In Tulsa, check out: Oklahoma Public safety, on Admiral betwee Yale and Sheridan RJ's gun sales, 2125 W. Concord cr. Broken Arrow TK supply, 313S.Kenosha (Tulsa) Lash's Gun Emporium, Mingo about 59th or so. Sports World, 41st just East of Sheridan Do not visit: Dong's on admiral They suck shit through a straw. |
Here's my two cents about new gun shopping around Tulsa and online. In my experience, buying readily available new guns off of the web vs a storefront comes out about even in the end. If you buy in a store you pay sales tax, which in Tulsa is 8.517%. If you buy on the web you typically pay shipping, the FFL's transfer fee, and you're supposed to pay the sales tax at tax time if it isn't charged initially . That means the price has to be discounted pretty good to beat most local shops. I have always been happy and been able to get a good deal by researching prices before I commit to buying from anyone. There's no reason to go into any of the local shops in order to buy without having calculated and knowing the cost to have the gun in your hand from at least a few online sources. As far as local shops, some are better than others and opinions about customer service vary depending on who you talk to. I would recommend going and browsing around all of them before you buy. Try and get a good idea of the different 'flavors' of shops around town. I will say that Oklahoma Police Supply usually has competitive prices, the people are friendly, and from what I have seen, they're good about answering questions honestly and helping customers. One last thing before I stop rambling, if you're new to gun shops, take everything you hear in a gun shop with a grain of salt at least, and probably some healthy skepticism. Gun shops are trying to sell the products on their shelves after all. |
Please let the record reflect that I agree 110% with this statement.

thank you thank you thank you |
Glocks are de debil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
man, chuck there's nothing wrong with a glock, in a sence they're kinda like pitbulls, subject to the people that wield them
|
Tell us how you really feel!
|
I have done business with Dong's too. I agree completly!

|
I haven't handled the m&p yet cause i'm pistol poor and everyone i know runs glock's sigs hk's or xd's........ Do the m&p's have that god awfull shity triger pull of the sigma???? In your price range i'd buy a glock in 9 or a xd in 40 Well actually i'd buy a 45 but thats just me |
They seem to be ok for other people. Not me though. Hell my wife carries one as her duty weapon. If I get an urge to handle one, I'll go out and pick up a 2x4. Same grip
|
hell chuck, that's part of the reason I went with the XD, I like glocks, I got big hands so the feel of the square grip doesn't bother me, but the grip angle is all wrong, when I use my natural pistol pointing hold with one and look through the sights, the front sight is pointing skyward, I have to actually think to hold the front down a bit so it points where I want it to, unlike my XD or 1911, when I pull'em outta the holster and point, the front sight is right where I want'em to be without even thinking about it, of course if I carried a glock around, I'd practice drawing the bitch until my hand/arm pointed it where I wanted it too, the grip angle on the XD's is perfect for my natural draw/fire, but the grip feel isn't perfect, on my XD40 the grip is a bit small for my hands, it feels like I'm holding a toy gun, the grip on the XD45acp is a fine fit though, but it wasn't around when back in 04' when the XD's price was semi reasonable, and I can't justify paying the 5 bills they're getting for one now since I'm pistol poor. |
Nah, dude, they are like women -- just gotta be nice to them!! |
nahnahnahnah...........they're nothing like women, yeah black is beautiful in some circles and they come in all the pretty calibers, but the magwells arn't nearly big enough |
sorry Nden -- didn't know you were a porn star!! |
well back in the late 80's I starred in the amateur skin flick series my then GF titled "BigFoot". |
By camming your wrist down to put the Glock sights on target, you are actually creating a much more stable shooting platform because it aligns your wrist/arm bones. It's really kind of a bulit in advantage if you think about it. |
fuckifIcanremember, I know she owned around 130 pairs of highheels and a bunch of boots and tennis shoes all 5'7" girl feet sized. |
Nah nah nah nah blah blah blah, I didnt hear a single damn thing you said ![]() I will state again for the record, glocks are de debil!!!!! |
No, really, Chuck -- once you get the hang of it nothing feels the same -- Oh and I had Chris at H&H narrow up the top of my grip just ever-so-slightly -- That and the trigger job that Joslyn did for me produced what is quite possibly the most perfect gun in the world. |
Imfreakingpossible! No glock trigger can match a good 1911 trigger. ![]() DAMMIT!!! |
That's true at least of all the glocks i've handled....... Although i'm going with the saying a friend told me once .....I show my friends my 1911's and my enemy's my glock's |
Is that all you got?
|
Mack you're right! Bevenue, come to the shoot this Saturday. There will be all types of handguns to shoot. The guys here will let you try their handguns out. That way you can get a real idea of what suits you best. |
Sigs are far from out of this guys price range. Maybe a Brand New one but you can easily pick up a trade in for the sub 500 mark. Hell I know who has original German 220' s for 399 + shipping. With the money saved he can get extra mags and ammo to practice with. |
why you looking to earn some money
