I am looking into buying a gun safe, and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? such as is there a specific brand that is better than the others? how much heat resistance should it uphold against? Should it be key & lock or a combination code? Anyway I do not want to spend an outrageous amount on it so if you guys have any suggestions that would be awesome. To me they all look pretty much the same. a safe is a safe in my opinion, but i thought i would ask and i might learn something new

Oh and it would be mainly for rifles and like 2 or 3 handguns.

cannon safes that academy sports sales is about the best deal/price that i have seen....

UNLESS you want to get into really big money safes......

I have quite a few diffrent ones..... and I think the cannon would stop the "average" theif just as well as any of the 0thers some of which cost 4times what it did.

A real theif that knows what he's coming after is going to get in any of them

the electronic ones are cool...... but i personally went with combination locks because the thought of an electronic one f'n up just seemed more likely to me..... look at what combination locks go threw at a school

When my son Matt worked at Bass Pro, he bought a Redhead Fire Safe that will hold 15 long guns. It's pretty nice.
The Cannons are great safes for the money. I have one full of junk, but it's not a fire safe.
I think I got mine somewhere around 1982 and haven't ever had a problem with it.
I believe it's worth the extra cash though to get a fire lining if you can afford it.

If you have an Atwoods store nearby, they usually have a good inventory of safes at bargain prices.

Atwoods-go here then click on locations

That may be true of the mdl you have but it's not true of the ones that academy sales in my area.............iirc the fire rating is the same as one of my other safes that cost about 3-400 dlrs more.

I've nevers seen a safe go threw a real housefire (where the house burns to the ground) but iirc someon posted pics on arfcom once and the contents didn't fair to good and it wasn't a cheap safe.........

yep, remember that pic, everything was a bit crispy and charcoaled, and it was supposed to have a high fire rating for an hour at 1k degress or something along those lines,

I've got a wal mart special sentry I picked up for $250, it holds 15 long guns and is fairly heavy (I'd guess around 250lbs, I carried it down a 32" hallway in a bear hug, so it might be lighter) 3/16" thick walls, 1 adjustable shelf and has a combo lock with I think 4 1" sliding bolts,

it's cheap and don't have any fire protection, but it's good enough to keep honest people honest.

MY old Cannon is over 25 yo. It's not a fire safe but has worked well for me all this time.
The hinges are exterior, my son's isn't.
I'd avoid outside hinges and look for one that has bolts into both sides of the door when closed and locked.
I don't like the electronic locks like ACman. A Sargeant-Greenleaf combination lock is the only way to go. Preferably with one that you can insert a key and lock the dial.

One thing I don't like about Bear Safes is they use that cylindrical security key, those things will flat tear up your pockets. I carried one of those for years for my business burglar alarm, take a new pair of slacks and 2 months later the pocket you carry your keys in is shredded.

update.. okay so i had an adventure this afternoon with my little niece and looking for gun safes. (note: never take an 8 year old girl to look at gun safes or sporting goods for that matter) Anyway i was in edmond doing other errands and decided to stop by Sportsman Warehouse.. they had some nice ones, but most were like around $1,000+, not a very big selection as well. This whole time my little niece is complaining about how bored she is, how stupid this is, and how i do not need a gun safe or guns for that matter. lol So when we got back to norman i dropped by atwoods, the safes there are cheaper, but a lot smaller. I wasn't too impressed so we leave atwoods and i turn out of the parking lot onto 24th W. Ave going North and my little niece blows chuncks all over my car. I am about to puke myself from the smell and such. (i am 22 and by no means able to handle throw up, dirty diapers, ect...) lol Thankfully, i am only 10 minutes from my brother's home, but that 10 minutes was one of the worst drives i have ever had. Lesson learned next time i am on a mission, i go alone!

Oh and i think i will have to end up spending more on a gun safe than i had originally planned unless they go on sale for some amazing reason!

I've cleaned puke out of planes...  I had a friend puke in my car back in college, luckily most of it went outside, but there was some inside.  I've also been splattered by others' puke on more than one occasion.

I feel your pain.

Good luck with the safe search.  Just be patient.

kids , if it's not on the cell, comp or tv, then it's boring as hell to them; the puking in your car was just to let you know what to expect when you have kids of your own, or maybe it was to show you her displeasure at being bored senceless.

OA used to have safes also, but they wern't cheap, last I looked there the starting price was around 8 bills,

I was in the atwood's in shawnee last week and noticed it has a bigger selection of stuff than the one in norman, the prices and sales tax are slightly higher also, but they may have the safe your looking for,

you might go by the ace hardware at 1918 w. main in norman, I worked there back in the late 80s early 90s,

they didn't stock the stuff, but they used to be able to order guns w/ffl, accessories, safes, reloading gear/ammo from the main warehouse,

I'm sure the prices are higher now, but they may have what your looking for and be able to order it in on their weekly store shipment, which used to be every wednsday morning, and that could possibly save you the drop/truck shipping cost that's added into the other stores prices.

Around Tulsa A.G. English...nice people to do business with...they run several brands and will give you the ins and outs on several models.  The owner is a shootere too.

I'm happy with a Canon and I like the electronic lock.  You can buy another to replace the one on top if you like, but they are very reliable.  The thing I like the best is that you can get in quick and I find myself always leaving something out and having to open it up again...far more convenient than a mechanical lock.  But, choose what you want...just what I like.

For your best deal go to a Browning Dealer; as a dealer they are required to buy a certain number of safes.  When the inventory gets too high they sell to get rid of them....definitely your best possible deal for a quality safe.
