I thought we were gonna have one of these. Did I mis something?
7/6/2006 9:31:41 AM EDT
[#1]
I thought so too. I have no idea why it never happened.

best laid plans man, but it beats hell outta me, I don't know what happened to it,

7/6/2006 2:57:58 PM EDT
[#3]
i have a flat that needs to be bent.
7/6/2006 3:47:17 PM EDT
[#4]
I've got a Romi that needs to be built.
7/6/2006 3:49:27 PM EDT
[#5]
I guess that you could say that I'm having my own. Finishing up my underfolder now, getting another kit in for a pistol build in the next week or so.
7/6/2006 4:03:56 PM EDT
[#6]
I gotta a few tools.
7/7/2006 4:57:53 PM EDT
[#7]
I started the original thread about a build party a few months ago while I was still in Kuwait.

It seemed like everybody got all excited and built their kits up before I got home...so I let the idea drop.

I sent one of my Romanian kits and a Global Trades receiver off to Missouri Custom Armament(aka...-Duke-Nukem-'s gunsmith business) to get built up.

I still have one Romanian kit and two Polish Underfolder kits. But I don't have any receivers.
7/7/2006 5:34:29 PM EDT
[#8]
I'll help anyone put one together if they want. Patrick Cudd comes first though.!!!
But you'll have to do it quick. My knee replacemnt has been rescheduled for Aug 16.
I've got the riveting tools and a drill press, the tool to properly locate the rivet holes in the receiver. But I'm not crazy about helping someone remove the rivefs from their kits. And I don't have a press over here to remove the barrel or barrel pin.
Barrel installation will be via the BFH method as will installation of the barrel pin.
Let me know if I can help you!

I'd do the romy and one of the polish on a flat,

hell the hardest part on building I've found is the demill,

I've learned to slow down and take my time while building,

after the first two of mine, the urge passed to hurry up and

get it completed just so I could shoot it and see if it blew up

or not, to taking the time to make the others look nice and pretty,

while the 100% receivers are nice and solid, to me they really

take away from the overall build experience, they make it too

easy, its like instead of building a balsa wood ship in a bottle,

your putting together a step by numbers snap model car,

but hell thats just my opinion, I started out building my own to

save some money and get a ak that I wanted, and found that

I enjoyed doing it, enough that I'm gonna rebuild the first two

and make them presentable, they function perfectly, their just

a tad ugly.

I'm willing to talk anyone through a build, and I got homemade

build tools so you'll get the experience of abdula building in a cave.

I've got a custom serial number NDS-1 receiver on order for my el-primo Polish Underfolder kit...I ordered it to match the numbers on the kit.

I should have it sometime next week...but I still need to prep the kit(remove the old rivets and barrel pin and press the barrel out of the front trunnion...) and I don't have any rivets. I was planning on sending this one to -Duke-Nukem-, too.

My remaining Romanian kit might be a candidate for a home-build. The same with my other Polish kit...I'm considering doing it as an AKM clone, so I'd have to get a fixed-stock rear trunnion and new stock set for it, though.

How hard is to do an underfolder kit...mainly the cut-outs for the underfolding stock & trunnion?

I'd be willing to trade some of my AR 'smithing skillz for some assistance putting together an AK...

their only a little more difficult than a standard build, only difference is the cutouts for the UF, get one of the metal cutting drill bit looking bits for a dremmel ( I think they're about $8 at walmart), it'll make the cutting go much quicker,

all you do is install the UF trunnion, then drill through the receiver and do the cutouts with the dremmel bit, its fairly easy but time consuming,

as for the AR building skills, I already got those, but I'm willing to pass along what I know about the AK stuff,

look at copesdist, they had romy stocks with the tang and trigger guard attached for $19, to put on the polish AKM clone, the grain will be alittle different from the handguard, but its the cheapest way of getting what your looking for, besides if you get different stock that matches the polish handguard, can always sell the romy stock and trigger guard on the EE to recoup some cost,

for your romy build, unless its a perfect kit, I'd build it on a flat, outta all the romy kits I've seen, only one has been of great quality, the others looked good, but had either canted sights, GBs or the trunnion was drilled crooked.

I just got a M92 Kit from ORF, and it is Really Nice, I can't wait to get it done.

I think I will make a pistol out of it, for now, and SBR it later.

Ive got a few I'd like to build under the tutelage of those that have done it.  Not sure if I have the time though....

I got a "naked" kit from them too. I just sent it back for the demilled kit though. WAY too much machining to be done on the naked kits for me. Already have the receiver to build it as a handgun too.
After having done 1 whole build, I understand what Dans talking about not wanting to help "de-rivit" the parts kits. Thats a chore!
7/12/2006 3:20:14 PM EDT
[#16]
Almost forgot to mention that I now have a drill press and a 12 ton shop press that I could provide if its not too far!
7/12/2006 7:16:06 PM EDT
[#17]
its quickest to have a demilled kit if going to a build party, but its understood that you may not have the equipment to prep, which is alright too, it'll just take a bit longer to complete,

taking it slow and easy, it'll add about an hour to the build time,

plus you'll need to bring a mag for fitting to the receiver, and some ammo for testing function and fire.

I can't stay on my feet for more than a couple of hours without putting ice on them or taking a pain pill. But if you want to do it, Ndenway, I'll bring my drill press, riveting tools, torch, etc and help. If people have their kits demilled and the necessary parts to build the rifles, we could help several of them get their guns together!
7/16/2006 6:29:12 AM EDT
[#21]
I might be able to show up for a Saturday build but I don't have any rivets...

I'd be wanting to build a Polish Underfolder...

I'll see if I can get a rivet set in time...I already have U.S. compliance pasrts.

early saturday's is fine with me, for those that can't make saturday, I'll be there friday night too,

IM or EM me and I'll give directions on how to get to my workshop ( be sure to include which way/where your coming from), wear something cool, cause its not quite hot as hell in there, but its God Damned close, and if you stroke out, your SOL cause EMS don't come out this far, so you get fed to the hogs

somebody will deffenatly need to bring a torch though, mine bit the dust last sunday and I can't afford another till payday,

and if your planning on showing up, then right now go and shoot some penitrating oil or blaster of some kind on the barrel pin so it can soak in well so it will be easier to knock out this coming weekend,

bring mags and ammo also, I've got an area to test fire for functioning.

What kind of torch?

I've got a regular propane torch I can bring...

I'm working the rivet issue right now...I should know something later tonight or tomorrow.

What kind of Dremel bit do I need to get?

What else do I need to bring?

If I can get all of my ducks in a row, I'm going to try like Hell to be there as early as you want me to be there Saturday morning.

the propane would be fine, the dremel bit is a metal bur/rasp or a 3/8" grinding wheel, walmarts got them, as for what else:

you'll need a flat and rails if thats what your using, or a 100% receiver,

your kit and all its little parts.

rivets.

922 parts.

a mag.

some ammo.

round file if you got one,

a UF will take about 8hrs to build if you have it demilled, add about an hour if it isn't, probably what will happen is that if we can get an early enough start we'll be able to stand the temp in the shed for about 5 or 6 hours,

so you'll at least get your flat bent, and trimmed where needed and all the stuff that takes riveting done, and will only need the UF fitted,

it all depends on how motivated you are, and how hot it gets, if it gets as hot as it did today, you'll look like this quick

Dude...I work out in the heat...I can handle it. I don't like it but I can handle it.

The only thing holding me up is the rivets.

I've got a 100% receiver...I ordered a NoDak Spud NDS-1 receiver with a custom serial number matched to my best Polish Underfolder kit. I just picked it up this afternoon after work.

I'm still waiting to hear back from my rivet guy...I'll let you know as soon as I find out something.

O.K., I just heard back from my rivet guy.

I'm supposed to call him at his shop with my order in the morning and he's going to send them via Priority Mail.

I should have them by Friday...I hope.

I'll be coming from Tulsa...

I'd like to, have to talk with the wife first but it should be OK on Sat.  What type of flats work best with the bending jig?  I need to order flats and rivits.  I have 2 propane torches and a small drill press that I can bring.  Please IM directions to the party.

I just LOVE how the b!t*h plans shit for me then doesn't tell me about it...

Sorry guys...I can't make it...

She's gonna owe me BIG TIME for this one...

The flats, rivits, compliance parts, etc. shipped today, so olyeller and I should be set to build on Sat.  Are there any tools (hand or power) that we should bring that would help?

Well if you both made plans for the weekend....the 1st person to inform the other person about these plans should be the person who gets to go through with these plans. Technically speaking.

if you got a dremmel, torch and round, flat files, calipers or anything you think you might need would help,

I only have one set of tools so it'd be the shits for everybody standing around waiting  for a guy to finish using them.

How about a medium sized one that spins fast?

to bring list so far:
small drill press, bits
calipers, dremel
punches, hammer, files, pliers
extenstion cord or 2
little fan that thinks it can
basic propane torch
kits, flats, rivits, keep-legal parts, ammo, mag, etc.
water, snack food, gloves, hat

What time do you want to start on Sat.?

I'm thinking around 730am, but we'll start as soon as ya'll show up, like I posted above, figure on about 8hr/rifle from start to finish, your time will vary a little from this but its a good thing, about six or so if the kits prep'd or its on a 100% receiver,

they can be done faster, but they tend to look like it, I'll have some there for ya'll to take a look at and see what you can possibly build,

I got one I built that took all of 4hrs from unprep'd kit to test fire, and it looks it, but it fires everytime, and then I've got one that I took my time on and it looks nice,

but thats what this thing is for, to make sure you don't make [m]any mistakes, or get discouraged and not complete your build,

thing of it is, that once you build one by yourself, you'll want to build more of them.

if I'm not there when you show up, knock on the door and they'll call me and wake my lazy ass up, I have been known to hit the snooze button a time or two
