Have any of you guys ever got together for an AK "Build Party"?

I think I'm going to want to build an AK or two when I get back home to Oklahoma from the "Sandbox"...

I don't have ANY experience building AK's, but would like to learn...

Might even trade some AR gunsmithing(I do know a little about that...) for some AK work...

It won't be anytime real soon, I won't be back home until May.

BTW- I'm from the Tulsa area.

I've owned and shot a few, but never built one.  Regardless, I'd like to join in if y'all get a build party going.

OKC- but could meet anywhere else

What's the drill?

Buy a complete parks kit (minus receiver) and then use a "flat" receiver??

Whatever it is, I'll do it.

Email me, Dr.B. I'll send you a brief description of how to build one. I sent a short email to TwoBravo on assembly and I'll resend it to you.
I volunteered a "possible" assembly party a couple of months ago. Depending on response and some other things here at home, we might do it fairly soon. Good bunch of guys here and I got to meet a lot of them at the shoots and at the builds. So it makes it fairly pleasant to do it again.
Ain't a sure thing, yet, but it might happen!

Email sent.    I'll take my chances around these pork chop eaters for the opportunity to build my own.  So far I've only met a few folks from this site (e.g. 1shott and RatTerrier) and quite frankly they are some scarry individuals.

if theres any pork chop eaters here, then I hope I never meet them, (unless their female that is), and if there should be any homos or asskissers on this site, then stay in the closet, cause that shits just nasty, (unless their female that is).

there, that being said we can get back on subject, I've got a bit of flat building experience and some tools I'd be willing to share, I won't do the work for you, but I'll make sure you don't make many mistakes, and when its done, it will be functional, how it looks is up to you and how much time you want to spend building, I've got my first one, and it goes bang every time but it looks like hammered BigFoot shit on a stick, then I got my latest one I'll let you look at and shoot, theres a world on difference in looks and finish.

Yep, I'll vouch for the quality of Ndenway's last build. It's not right - it should belong to me!
He did one hell of a job building the last one and it looks great! My first one looks screwed up from where I let someone mig weld on the flash hider. That ain't happening any more. I've silver soldered on the rest and they look really good.
The damn kits have gotten too expensive. It's almost cheaper to buy a complete gun.
One thing about building your own, it's fun! The first one I built stays in my truck almost all the time. It works and shoots like an AK should.
1/16/2006 5:26:58 PM EDT

well the first flat build took 5 hours from prep to test shot, the latest took bout 9 hours from prep to testing, and you can deffinatly tell the difference.

the flats I use are the tapco ones sold everywhere for $13 bucks each, as for kits, it all depends on what your looking for, for Romainians, Dpharms.com has the best availiable $109 + $13 S&H, plus his rivet/center support kit has the correct long rivets in them, copesdist.com also has decent ones w/g2fcg $134 + $7.95 S&H on all orders , polish from Dansammo.com or ammunitionstore.com, and the SA-85s from centerfiresystems.com,

you can get compliance parts from midwestarmory.com, he's got the best prices on FCG, flats and slant breaks/flashhiders, pistol grips + he got $3.85 S&H on any sized order.

check on all sites, they all sell different kits and parts, some offer combos that can save you big time cash, you just gotta shop around and compair, the S&H can kill any savings so factor that in, just make sure when you order that you specify that you want a MATCHING NUMBERED KIT, they cost a little more, but you don't have to worry about the bolt head spacing correctly (still should check to be safe), figure on a romy costing about 2 bills to build, a polish or SA85 about 3.5, the compliance parts and S&H are what negate your build vs. buy savings, if you just want one to shoot, then buy one of the ready made century wasr for $275, but if your wanting something you put together with your own hands then look below and that will give you a good idea as to what it will cost to build your own, haven't looked at cost in a couple of weeks, so prices are what I remember from then.

you'll need these parts to build:

kit- $100 to $250 + S&H - romy, polish uf or SA85 matching #

%80 flat/rails- $13 tapco new style

**[%100 receiver- $55 to $100 + S&H and FFL fee, this is optional if you don't want to bend yourown flat]**

G2 FCG- $26 to $40 shop around for these

e-clips for fcg pins- two for .25 cents at hardware store

flash hider/slant break- $10 to $15

pistol grip- $8 to $25

if doing screw build- $4 all screws hardware store/ $8 for 10/32 tap.

rivet/center support kit- Dph has these kits/ correct long rivets for $6

single center support- $3 or you can make your own from scrap steel tubing

rivet kits- $6 to $12 from various board sellers in the EE, I've used the ones from low_lead and their the correct metric sized, but any will work.

finish- $3 to $25

don't think I left anything out, anybody feel free to add anything I may have left out.

Wow...

This could be a Hell of a "party"!

Okie's, AK's, maybe some BBQ, and some BEER!(for after the building, of course...)

I should be back sometime in early May...I'll keep you posted.

I'd really like a chance to meet some of you guys and build an AK or two...

The same goes for you, Rat! The deal about folding flats and making receivers is out of the question though. I don't have the press or jig - both were borrowed last time!

I've got a lot of things going on right now. On the farm and messing with Old Bud's business.
If things calm down in the next couple of weeks, we'll see about doing it some week end.

well tapco has a romy kit that has everything you need to build/assemble, but the one rifle kit I've seen from them looks like the the one I got from akparts(canted FST, RSB, GB), kits can be a crap shoot reguardless of where you buy, but the romy kits I've seen from DPH are about as perfect as your going to find, copes hand picked was second, the polish UF I have I got from akron armory, it was supposed to be a matching # kit, it wasn't, and I waited nearly 40 days for it, so stay away from that dude, there alot of his unhappy customers here on the board, you can get a polish from just about anyone.

yeah, I bought 5 sets of them back in july, ended up buying some 3/16th x 1 3/4 ones last month so that I could use them, had been buying the sets from lowlead on the board for $8.50 a set, but I had to pay extra for the center one and make my own center support.

well I wouldn't go so far to say "anything", so don't base your decision offa my word alone, key is to shop around on prices, it the S&H and compliance parts prices that'll realy kick your ass if you buy from more than one vendor or in small quantities.

both DPH and copes have recently went up on their romy prices, but their the best ones I've seen, both also stock the polish ufs, and have compliance parts and flats, they cost a bit more, but you'll be buying from one place and it'll save on S&H, I think DPH is $13 per rifle and copes is $7.95 for up to 1000 items, DPH also sells 100% ubanks receivers for $60? if you don't want to bend one, had both with and without trunion holes.
centerfiresystems got $9/order this month, and for compliance parts midwest armory has special package deals listed in the EE, and his S&H has been $3.85/order.

I just bought two of the Romanian kits that are on the market these days for $208/shipped...

Most of the kits(95%+) this guy has been shipping are well coated in cosmoline and still have the wax paper in the bores. ALL appear to be unfired.(i.e.- no carbon fouling or wear on the gas piston, no marks/wear on the bolt face, no marks/wear on the hammers, and no marks/wear on the on the mag latch or the lip that holds the front of the mag...)

Also, the kits he is currently shipping all have MATCHING NUMBERS...

This comes from several of his customers and some have also posted pictures of kits they've received.

yeah Dan, been looking at them, cfs got the $9 S&H this month, but I just ordered another romy from DPH, I couldn't pass up the $124 combo deal, as for putting a romy together on a GTR, I wouldn't do it either, for the most part the romies arn't nice enough to build on anything better than a flat, if you ever get tired of looking at that kit and want to do another flat build, come on out, I got the tools you can use.
