So me and the fiance are thinking about moving up to SW Virginia (Carroll, Grayson or Wythe counties) next year after we get married. And I was hoping to get a heads up on the 2A situation up there. Coming from a pretty friendly 2A state, I'd hate to get up there and find out it's not. Also, does anyone know if I can transfer my CWP from FL to VA, or will I have to go though a course (I was active USN when I got my FL one so I didn't have to)?

Thanks, for the help/advice

very 2A friendly. NFA is no problem here. The only thing you have to do is register machinegun's with the state police within 24 hours of taking possession. There is no other registration of any kind in Va except for the MG's.
Your DD214 should be enough for you to get your carry permit. VSP link The link has the statue and a link to the PDF so you can download the app.

ETA:

The court shall require proof that the applicant has demonstrated competence with a handgun and the applicant may demonstrate such competence by one of the following, but no applicant shall be required to submit to any additional demonstration of competence:

I won't turn this into a FL versus VA thread, but I think you'll find that overall, VA is actually slightly better than FL on guns.

Open carry is legal here, no ifs, ands or buts about it. You can carry concealed in places that serve alcohol (as long as you don't drink). You can carry pretty much anywhere a typical person might normally go, other than schools and courthouses. If you have a CHP you can actually drive onto school property with a firearm, you just have to stay inside the car with it - a change in the law to allow parents who carry to drop kids off.

Just get a resident CHP when you arrive. It's $50 for 5 years, shall-issue, and your DD214 is all the proof of training you need.

If you decide on Carroll you will be in my area of operations.

The sheriff is currently JB Gardner, he is up for reelection but is likely to win as the other candidate is an out of towner that  got fired from the department after a dwi charge.

He is fair about his handling of most issues.

What kind of place are you looking for?

10-20 acres, mostly wooded and mostly buildable with a water source, stream/small branch/spring. Would like a small house/trailer on it so I can use my VA guarantee.

Hmm.   Bit of a rough play there.

Thought sections of the Buckwoods might still be available.    Check with any of the local Realtor agents in Hillsville.   Most of the for sale by owner are ethier massive ridges or so smal and run down the banks won't touch them.

Good place to raise a family.  Hard to secure a sizable living wage locally.

I had to relocate to Roanoke for work.  Still keep in touch with the family back home.

Thanks for the info. I check the realty sites like Land and Farm, Landwatch, Realtor.com pretty regularly. But I have a feeling that it's going to be something that we walk into when we're visiting the area. I wouldn't have a problem buying something that was owner financed.
