Well, there I am cruising along on a lower build and I launch the buffer retainer into the stratosphere and now can't find it. Does anyone know a store that is within reasonable distance from Stafford that has individual parts for sale. Va arms co isn't open on Sunday. Or is there a good fellow that would be willing to link up with me and part with one? It's my first SBR build and was hoping to have it done so I could test fire tomorrow if that helps generate a little more sympathy ??

Sorry.  Can't help with your questions ...

... but if test firing is the goal, you can mate the completely assembled upper and lower receivers and test-fire to your heart's content.  When assembling the lower to the upper, let the buffer/spring group hang out of the tube and install the pivot (front) retaining pin.  Then insert the properly assembled buffer/spring completely into the guide/tube and hold it into place with your index fingertip.  Close the receivers together and seat the rear retaining pin.

(When the rifle is assembled, with or without the retainer in place, the face of the buffer bears against the rearmost surface of the bolt carrier ... the buffer retainer only is there to keep the buffer from flopping around when the rifle is not completely assembled.)

Can't help, but a flashlight might help provide another light source to reflect.

Hopefully I can use this as justification to my wife why I should buy a bunch of spare parts

How about the gun show in Fredericksburg?  You'll probably find parts there.

IGNORE THIS POST...GUN SHOW WAS CANCELED...should have checked my facts before I posted.

The barrel is just under 13in with the KX5, I have some 12.37 in hand guards inbound. I'm shooting for the hand guard over lap with just the tip of the muzzle sticking out look.

Are you going to use a hand stop?

I'm not sure yet, when I shoulder the rifle and place my hand where I normally do in the standing position my hand grabs right around the gas block. My hand guards should be in tomorrow, so it will be off to the range tomorrow or Wednesday to run a couple hundred rounds through it. If I run into any heat issues I with the forward hand I will definitely pick up a hand stop.

Yeah, I just waiting to see if I can get a set on sale during the holiday period. Took it to the range today with no issues, ran 125 rounds through her. Hand guards get pretty hot so I will probably have to use gloves when I start taking her to courses.
