Why do you need to pay anyone to do it for you? Dig a hollow under the
stump and fill it with 50/50 mix of your favorite binary explosive and
black powder. Grab a beer so you can hand it to your friend and say
" hold my beer I got this".

How hard is that. You are just going to pay someone your hard earned
money to do the same thing and they get to have all of the fun .

If he mentions NOVA, that pretty much means no tannerite or even pulling the trigger is allowed.

Home depot rents stump grinders.  Thoughts on doing it yourself?  http://howto.homedepot.com/videos/watch/1907075351001/The-Home-Depot-Tool-Rental-Center-Stump-Grinder.html

I just bought my first house this past october, and we have alot of stumps around the yard. The way I've been getting rid of some of them is to cut the bottom out of a 55 gallon drum and place over the stump. Then build a hell of a fire in it and get a good bed of coals in the bottom and let it burn up the stump. It Takes a few good fires, so its not the quickest way but has worked so far. I made a lid out of expanded metal to keep as many embers as possible from escaping.  I normally start a fire on a friday of a rainy weekend and let the stump burn until sunday. The stumps to big to fit in a barrel i had the neighbor dig up with his tractor. Most of our stumps are old and starting to rot so i doubt burning them would work good on a green stump.

Just my $.02

LOL.  Not a good idea to attach a strap or chain to the ball hitch.

Yeah, NOVA - no fun.

Ideally, I'd have a nursery remove/grind the existing stump and plant a new tree for me.

Do not put a new tree in the exact same spot.
You are just asking for failure.

There are not many areas in NoVA you could blast ANY stump.
You will pay for a lot of windows and invite the popo to visit you.

Just one stump, or multiples?

If multiples....rent a backhoe for a day.

Maybe post a wanted ad for someone with a 'hoe or stump grinder on CL for some beer/pizza money...

The guy who's done my trees said they if you're not in a hurry just drill holes into the stump and dump evaporated milk into it. It'll rot.

We've had several taken out using Freedom Tree Service, and I am very happy with their work.  The first one was a large, mature pine tree in the back of our property (among a dozen others) that was dead, and needed to be cut down, and the stump removed.  After scheduling the work with Freedom, we came home one day and noticed something funny about the back yard....oh, the tree is gone.  Cleaned up, looked like it was plucked up and vanished with hardly a trace.

Good people, as good a price as anyone else we looked into.
