Yeah I know don't speed, whatever... But is it still illegal? What if I had it on by accident, can the LEO take it from me and do they use radar detector detectors? I have an Escort 9500ix which has VG2. |

Over 80 mph for reckless.
ETA: Tough to beat some of the instant on lasers. WAZE helps on well traveled roads. Quoted:
This and if you're caught going over 20 mph the posted limit or anything over 85mph you're going to jail. Quoted:

I wouldn't even think about using the detector, just not worth it. Short of the speed limit crack down episodes (usually on I-81), you can usually drive up to 10mph over and be ok. Caveat: there are certain departments that are more aggressive about this.....especially if you are a Yankee .
HB 1317 didn't pass this year, so reckless driving remains 80 mph, which is weird b/c my daily commute is 80mph in front of troopers in the median.....just going with the flow. The 85mph speed is also correct, that is when the police start taking you to jail and the court determines if you lose your license. ETA: reckless is in excess of 80mph, or 15mph(Interstate) over. |

They can also tell if you have a radar detector even if it is turned off. Best bet is to disconnect it and put it in your trunk while passing through Virginia. Not sure if serious. I have driven through VA many times and never been caught. One guy did have a RDD but I got it turned off in time. |

I can understand that. Anything from Groton to JAX work related, I rent a car and drive.

I run a Driver STI which is supposedly immune to RDD...
Also, operating a detector is only an $85 fine, and jbts can only hold ur detector to be used as evidence...they must return it after the court hearing. Running Waze and my detector has saved me many times... DEF worth the cost, and getting caught is DEF better than gettng a ticket. Police... When the IRS just isnt enough. |

I got pulled once, officer said license, registration, and radar detective please....
It was dark out, my Rd did not go off, I was not speeding. wrote me a ticket with the radar detector serial number on it.... then gave it back. Smaller town, on a 30 mph area, I would doubt police really care on the large highway, just because they can literally pull over anyone and cite them for speeding... so many to pick from.... I only use waze now everywhere I go, pretty great app! I have unlimited data plan, so I don't really know how much data the app uses.... ymmv |
| I run a Driver STI as well. Normally use use it when one out of the area trips. I actually got busted for it once but that was because i got tired of taking it out of the window and the cop seen it when I passed him. It has saved me from many of tickets. The ticket for for having one came to like $110 or something like that. Honestly it is a way better option than getting a speeding ticket as it doesn't go on your record as moving violation. That also means that your insurance doesn't go up as well. Win win in my book. |

They'll write you for everything imaginable, including and especially radar detectors, and they rarely give warnings. |

I got pulled over by an FFX county cop going stupid fast once (it was well above 85) when I was getting onto I-95. He chewed my ass out loudly and for a solid minute and told me because my record was crystal clear I should take this as a sign to slow down. A guy at work said that would NOT have happened with the VSP. Ditched my sports car very soon after. A car that fast didn't belong in NOVA - certainly not in my hands. |

If it's VSP or it's any cop on a motorcycle, you're getting a ticket. That's what they do. You might get a break on a ticky-tacky equipment issue like a busted light or a recently expired inspection, but not for any moving violation. No point in even discussing it with them. |

i actually averaged 77 mph from the WV border to Richmond, saw a couple of VSP and Waze was great as usual. there was a VA Sheriff doing 85 mph on 64 East, about 4 of us followed him, he didn't seem to care for about 30 miles. how come I-81 was so busy yesterday in the afternoon, almost bumper to bumper traffic? |
|
81 is always busy on a Sunday afternoon, especially a pretty one. Major route for truckers and 4 wheelers on the east coast and points west. It does move along at a decent speed, assuming that the 4 wheelers don't freak out.

This state trooper sure couldn't tell I had my redline on.
I recently was following right, in front/beside/behind a trooper for a few miles the other day. I guess it really is stealth or he wasn't looking. |

DOWNLOAD WAZE Actually kept me from possible getting a ticket earlier. I was on the toll road cruise control at 8 over. Checked waze and realized there was a cop sitting on the median around the bend. I slowed to 5 over, marked him as I went by. In my rear view I saw him nab the guy a few car lengths behind me. |
