Im over here in Texas and wondering what your impression is of the open carry laws in your state or the lack thereof...

Do you literally see folks walking around in public all the time with holstered weapons???

Is it your impression that this causes alarm....or have you seen or heard of any stories of problems that occurred as a result of the largely unregulated open carry freedom in the state?

Im just curious what it looked like in a state where it was wide open...

Thanks

I have open carried with no issues at all. I don't see it all the time but, I do see it often.

The main issue you have is the farther North you go in the state, the more you will run into anti-gun folks who will cause you issues. I have heard of "scared" folks reporting things to business owners or the police. For the most part, it is handled properly.

Norfolk police had to get their pee pee smacked a few times to get the point across.  I open carry every day and have for years, never had a problem from the public or the LEO in the Va Beach, Norfolk, and Portsmouth areas of VA.    I did have one lady sneer, nice gun once.  I smiled made eye contact and said thank you.  I don't count that as a problem though.

I've seen it a handful of times. Never done it myself.

Only time I wasn't impressed with the person carrying was some kid in the gander mountain acting slightly childish. But he was just goofing around with his friends acting like a typical redneck, not doing anything with his firearm.

Well, having actually lived up here in "occupied" NoVa for some time now and OC a fair bit, my experience has been the opposite.

Mainly because most people around here are oblivious to it.

I do it sometimes and no one pays it any mind,I see others do it every once in a while.

Has not been an issue with it so far.

Most I see doing it including off duty LEO tend to have crap holsters , way to many Sherpas in use around here.

Non LEO I see doing it have no reloads unless They have a mag in Thier pocket.

I OC pretty regularly in occupied territory (Alexandria). Only ever been noticed once, and it was by a fellow who asked me if I was a cop. I can attest to the fact that people up here are completely oblivious.

I'm pretty much always OC. As noted, most people never notice. Those that do usually have positive reactions or want to know more.

And on those hot muggy summer days, it's really nice not to have to worry about cover.

We have restaurants here in NVA that welcome open carriers and give a 10% discounts for open carry night.

In the Vienna area (and in northern Virginia generally), I very rarely see anyone open carrying. The automatic assumption is that they are some type of law enforcement.

Now that I think about it, I did have one negative reaction. I was asked to leave the Whole Foods in Reston a few years ago. There should be an archived thread here in the HTF about it.
I don't OC much, I prefer to conceal myself.

You should visit sometime and try it on for size yourself!  VA doesn't even infringe the rights of non-citizens, all are welcome to OC!

yeah, let us know when you're gonna visit and we'll even set up an OC dinner.

I see it occasionally. Much more around hunting season. To the west of Richmond, it's basically ignored. Nobody bats an eye.

I purposefully don't travel up to NOVA very often, so I can't say about up there.

Yep, Olivers_AR, kcobean, and myself went to a great Cajun place in Leesburg that has (or, at least, used to have, don't know about now) "Open Carry Wednesday", 10% off for open carrying.  Food was great, as was the company, of course!

Hmmmm... we need to do this again!

It's really not an issue here.

Check out the VA forum of opencarry.org for loads of anecdotes... most are basically "I open carried at ____ today.  Nobody noticed."

OC is good to go in most of Virginia.

There are a few areas up north where you might get a few looks, but as long as you are in the right legally speaking, who cares?

I would ask that you remember to carry yourself professionally, and remain courteous to all you encounter while carrying. You represent all Virginia gun owners out there.

I see open carriers every once in a while.  I've only done it a couple of times.

I see a LOT of motorcyclists open carrying.

I've also seen a few folks carrying inexpensive (bersa, hi point, etc) guns in $5 gun nylon holsters.  I'm not sure if they're new to guns and started inexpensively or maybe they aren't all that well off and can't afford the $50 for a CHP... either way I do not care and I fully support them arming themselves.

I have/do OC in the good part of NOVA. Never an issue.

I see it here and there but not all the time.

By good part of NOVA I am talking the Winchester area.

I OC pretty regularly, mostly when I'm too lazy to conceal. Here in Lynchburg, it's pretty common to see people OCing. However, most of them are older dudes with VCDL hats, everyone I know my age (mid-20's) CC's unless they're feeling lazy/bored.
