Getting transferred from Manasshole to DC and dont want to commute far. Anyone know of a town or city in the suburbs or country that isnt crazy expensive and wouldnt be a horrible commute to DC traffic?
I know im going out on a limb but the VRE to the metro then walk two blocks makes for a 13 hours day.. :( |

Are you looking to rent or buy, and how big of a place are you looking for?
Just about anything inside the beltway is going to be pricey. I live and work in Old Town Alexandria but it's worth the rent since I can walk to work, the grocery store, post office, and a bunch of other stuff. I'm also two blocks from the metro which is nice since my fiance works in DC and doesn't own a car. It also really depends on where in DC you're commuting to. What would be the closest metro stop to your new work? |

What would be the closest metro stop to your new work? Rosslyn to be exact. To me not having a 2 hour commute during rush hour is worth the extra money to spend on a place. Right now I'm open for a house or rent an apartment. I don't care too much. I just don't wanna live right in the city. |
| For getting to Rosslyn you have access off of the Orange or Blue lines so that gives you quite a few options. Another thing to consider is that there's a TON of buses that go to Rosslyn which could add to areas you could live at (and bus is much cheaper then metro). Feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions. |

I can go from Centreville to Roslyn in under an hour at rush time on bus and metro. If you moved into Fairfax near Vienna metro it would be half an hour each way. Brother in-law does this. Always nice to park at his place when I want to take my family into the District. |

I'd suggest buying the house next door to me (inside the Beltway, near Rt50/495 interchange) as you'd have an easy commute (either by POV or bus via Rt29)... would be nice to have a like-minded neighbor. But at $499K list price (down from $520K) for a refurbed 1946 cape-cod... probably not in the ballpark. Clearly, the burst housing bubble has been blown up again. Good for my comps, for if I ever have to/decide to leave... but deyam. There's a couple other houses relatively closeby in the lower $400K range... but they aren't next door to me. Hence the lower market value. But seriously... good luck in your search to find a closer place. As much as I hate the fact that I owe so much money, for such little home... and an older home that I needed to dump even MORE money into just to bring it out of the '40s... I value my time more than a bigger/newer/nicer property. My lifespan would be much shorter with a long commute... and time spent at home with my 2yr old is exponentially more valuable than time spent sitting in traffic and/or at the mercy of crowded/fubar Metrorail. So I completely understand your desire to relocate closer. |

There are some decent pockets here and there if you're going to drive to work. Del Ray, Shirlington, Annandale etc are all a reasonable commute. We just went from a $3000/mo apartment in Arlington along 66 to Del Ray @ $2200/mo for a row house. Commute went from 15 minutes to 30 or so, but manageable. We did give up super close metro though, it's about a 20 minute walk now vs 5 before.
As was stated earlier though, our time was worth the extra rent living close to work. But now that I have a parking spot, we drive more so moving away from metro was doable. |

I'm working right before the key bridge so I was thinking of checking out falls church but my father in law said its got a lot of Julio's runnin around :/ Depends on where in Falls Church you look. Obviously the more "affordable" spots will have a higher ratio. In our neighborhood the numbers are going down... as when one group moves out, the house they leave behind is typically unaffordable to that demographic. That has been the case for a couple houses by me, and was the case for us when we bought. We replaced a multi-family who crowded our house and clogged the street with 7 or 8 vehicles. Those that remain on my particular block are good folks... respectful, hard-working, good property upkeep. But whenever I pass the message board for what will end up being my daughter's elementary school, I always jokingly ask myself if they'll offer SSL vs ESL classes there (el mensaje es en español). |

I just moved out of FC (not for bad reasons). Most of the route 7
and Lee Highway cooridor is pretty solid. It changes by 7 corners and south of route 50, and heading west on Lee Highway near gallows. it's improving very rapidly though as was said. Rents are not going to be great in all the nice parts, expect $1800-2000+ for a commercial 1br. There are some good houses for rent here and there in the $2500 range sometimes. |
