I need to have an A/C unit installed in a town house. the third floor is very hot in the summer and I want to get this cool for sleeping. I have a unit now that cools the first and second well enough and is over 10 years old now.

Does any have a company they can recommend? I am in Loudoun County.

Thanks for looking.

I can't find his website but, here is a site that has his info.
Steve Hare

He replaced part of my a/c and we are having him come back to replace the rest, money dictated how much we could do at one time.
Steve is a great guy and is a firearms enthusiast. I highly recommend him.

Had my upstairs A/C replaced last year by Shanahans.  Great service

Thanks for the replies. Are you a member of Angie's list? Is it worth the 25 dollars?

I have a few buddies that work for B & B.

They do good work.

Very very good.

When he was a counterman at RE Michael in Merrifield year ago  he spent most of his time on the phone walking OTHER refrigeration guys through problems.

Dobson's has done right by me a few times.  Including when my gas furnace went out the day my first son was born.  I came home to the house and it was 50 degrees and dropping.  They had someone out the next day before I had to bring my wife and newborn home.

I've had great experience with Charlie @ Maximum Mechanical.  This is for work done on my primary residence and rental properties.  Furnace and AC repairs, replacements, maintenance, etc.  He's a good dude...

I use NoVa Mechanical.  They are in Sterling.  Have been using them for about 8 years or so and have been bery happy.  The service tech that always comes out is a guy I have known for 18 years.  No issue with him being in the house unescorted.

I can pull a number if you need it.

We used S&S Contracting there in Sterling, when we had the condo in Ashburn.

I'd recommend them to anybody - quick, efficient, and the tech showed me a few pointers for
maintenance that saved me having to call them out at a later point for a petty issue. (I figure,
he could have screwed us over, but didn't, so they earned any & all recommendations that I
can give them.)

What with your current installation working -- albeit less than optimally cooling the third floor -- the problem could be one of inadequate insulation or incorrect ducting.  The duct(s) servicing the upper floors likely have/has one or more dampers that are intended to be used to adjust the airflow.  This allows the homeowner to accommodate the thermal dynamics of  the airflow during heating and cooling seasons.  (Forced air heating needs more airflow in the lower floors; cooling requires the opposite.)

Fixing the duct-work problems in my house (whereby central A/C was added to a system originally designed solely for forced air heating) would require gutting the interior.  It is much more economical to use 'spot' cooling (via a window unit) than redo the house.

A quiet window unit (with an unobtrusive external footprint to deal with your community's potential by-laws) could be all you need for the next 5 or 10 years.  Just a thought ...

My wife used to work for Snell Heating & AC, (of course, since we moved she doesn't) but when she worked for them they always did quality work.

Good point, I have considered this, and was looking at the different options. There were not really any that I liked.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. They are really appreciated.
