Didn't see one in the VA Important Threads sticky and the Training Forum is kinda light, so I figured I'd ask just in case it already exists.

Is there a thread already in existence where folks have laid out training opportunities in the VA area similair to the shooting match thread/map/calendar? Now that I'm back from overseas and have settled in the NOVA area for the foreseeable future, I'd like to take the opportunity to take some courses and maintain the meager skills I have as well as learn some new ones. Pistol, AR/AK carbine, pistol caliber carbine, one day to a four day weekend...I'm interested in them all.

If it already exists, could someone be kind enough to point me in the direction? If not, is it something others besides myself would like to see?

Thanks

Eric

As it stands now there are 3 types of class threads that can be listed in the HTFs on this Site.

The first are classes offered by those who pay to advertise here. These are either Industry Partners or Dealers that specialize in classes like this. I'm not aware of any for this area.

The second type you will see are offered by members of our "Trainers Program". These are trainers from around the state who have agreed to meet the requirements of this program. You can tell who they are by the little pistol icon below their name/avatar.  They can only list classes in their HTF, and none of the others.

The last type are the classes listed by people who may be attending, or know of a class coming up. They have no financial ties to the class, and just want to give folks a heads up.

This HTF has several "Trainers" who regularly list classes throughout the year. We also have threads that come up from time to time by those who just want to pass along an FYI.

I have chosen not to make a single thread as it would be difficult to keep track of all the classes that come up throughout the state.

That doesn't mean that I oppose such a thread, just that I haven't felt the need to do one.

I will see what kind of consensus can be built in this thread.

Thanks for the detailed response and explanation.

Seeing a couple "attendee" posted threads is what sent me on the search for a compiled thread.

Guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for the singular threads unless the demand warrants a dedicated one and it becomes a reality.

VA-gunnut: thanks for all your hard work in this HTF.

VA-gunnut, thanks for the explanation.

It's kind of a PITA to look through the "training" forum when they're scattered in different subforums.

Anyway to crosslink them into the HTF?  Kind of like the site does when you can search the EE by state.  At least that way a new thread would pop up whenever the authorized folks post something up.

There is no function to search for class listings at this time, and I doubt there would be anything like that coming soon.

There are supposedly some big changes coming in the future with the layout of the Site. I'm not sure when this will occur, but it may open up some other options for making it easier to list/find class threads.

I'm already working one calendar (the shooting events - USPSA, 3gun, high power, etc.), would be willing to set up another for this if there's interest.

I would be interested, especially if its similar to the competition calendar.  Great for planning purposes and would help get the word out for local training events.

So, how many would we have?

There's FPF Training (1911SFOREVER) and Virginia Tactical (VIRGINIA-TACTICAL), who else?

I need names, people, and I need them NOW!!!

We have quite a few trainers, but we have lots of people who will stop by and give us an FYI.

I don't know if it would be better to just list all the trainers with their websites, or to keep an updated list as they put their classes together.

I have financial ties with

Now that's out of the way ... VA Tactical in Culpepper, FPF Training in Culpepper, Pistol-Training.com in Culpepper and can vouch for the Echo Valley Training Center Facility which is near NoVA. There's also Proactiveshooters.com in Richmond which I know isn't part of NoVA, but he's active in the HTF along with John who's with FPF Training. There's many instructors to choose from with various backgrounds who can teach various weapons. Living down here in Hampton Roads, I'm fortunate to travel 3-4hours north to NoVA or 3-4 hours south to Fayetteville, NC for training. Echo Valley has various instructors utilizing their facility so there's a lot of options there.

As far as Redback One, we're all over the place nowadays. Our next VA course is going to be the 3-Day Home Defense & Personal Protection on October 4-6, 2012 @ the ITI Facility in Schacklesford, VA. Tried to put something up in Echo Valley but couldn't get our schedules to fit. Nonetheless, I'm sure to put us there in 2013.

I'm actually going to PGPFT for a tactical rifle class this weekend. A buddy was supposed to go with me but his leave got canceled and he can no longer attend so his spot is open. I'll be driving up from NoVA and already have a hotel room if someone wants to take his place. The class is this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. June 15-17.

I have the shooting calendar events color coded by type of event, ie, USPSA, 3gun, rifle, etc.
Any preferences on whether to color code for type of training vs. trainers?

wmounds,
First off, thanks for doing this! I have struggled to find training in Virginia to fit into my schedule.  I am sure this will be a big help.
To me it would make more sense to color code by "type of training".
It seems like there would be a whole lot of trainers, compared to "type of training" and coloring by trainer would get cumbersome.

BTW:
Graham Combat resides in NOVA and is trying to have more classes open to the public in this area.
His schedule is linked here.

I would have to agree with this statement. The number of different instructors (both local and those that come into town from out of state) would get confusing. Color coding for Pistol, Carbine, Shotgun, and Pistol/Carbine would probably be easier to keep track of. Maybe add a distinguishing characteristic to show "Basic" vs "Advanced" courses?

Thanks for taking this on. I've never built an online calendar, but no time is ever completely free.

Thanks

Eric

OK, sorry about the delay.. Google Calendars had changed a couple of things wrt merging calendars and then displaying the merged result, so I had to re-learn some things.

Anyway, FPF Training and Proactive Shooters is up, am working on Redback One and Graham Combat today.

I need more names and dates, folks!!

I definatly recommend Pat Goodale's Practical Firearms Training
http://practicalfirearmstraining.com/
I have taken a bunch of courses there and never been disappointed.

Pat Rogers lives in Virginia and teaches a few courses throughout the state. He is a very well known and recognized instructor
http://www.eagtactical.com/

Firearms Training and Solutions does one on one training in the Shenandoah Valley. I havent taken any courses from them but I do know the owner and he seems like a pretty squared away guy and knows his stuff.

I know its not in Virginia but with it being is such close proximity you might want to include Academi (the new Blackwater)

That's what I'm trying to put together here.

Unfortunately, Google Calendar issues and a bathroom remodel has delayed full implementation.
