Question?????......""General Taylor retired from the Virginia Army National Guard as a Colonel with over 33 years of service in 2006. ""
""Major General John D. Taylor assumed command of the Virginia Defense Force in August, 2006"" How do you get promoted TWICE after retirement? |

I got bored during the hurricane deployment, and asked one of the VDF guys how their promotion system worked. Apparently it's a three way mix of time in service/grade, classes you take, and who-you-know-who-you-blow. |

I worked with them for a week when my NG unit got called up for Hurricane Irene. State tacked four of them onto us and they were an enthusiastic extra set of hands that saved my guys some work, I'll say that much. Same experiences here- during deployment prep or state emergency duties I've seen them bust their butts for very little or nothing in return. |
| You have to ask yourself......why wouldn't you go Guard/Reserves? You will get more out of it, have a more defined organization, and only have to prove your worth to the active duty. I'm sure there a some work mules in the VDF, but the overall leadership seems questionable. Like the military, some units I'm sure are much better than others. |
| When I was at VMI we had a few of them that would show up to parades and other social gathering where we were present. They tried making us salute them and talking to us like they were superdeltarangersseals who cut thier teeth in the 'nam . They are a bunch of nut-gargling fudd's who have nothing better to do. I'm sure there are some decent guys in there, but that's not the impression I got. |

A pretty amusing thread on a dopey VA forum that explores all angles about the VDF: http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/40/467613/page-1.html ETA: Some great Youtube videos of them. They have a riverine force, too! Not only a Riverine Force but also an Air Wing. Enthusiastic guys with poor leadership describes them very well. Everything they have they buy themselves. So equipment is non-existant. Training is so-so. We used to have some fun once or twice a year doing riot control training with the national guard. Of course we had no riot control equipment other then batons. Not even helmet or gas masks. We would do the formation training with the guard on day one, then on day two we were the rioters, that was kind of fun. Until my 1st Sergeant got his leg broken and VADF found out they had to pay him workman's comp. That put an end to our riot training because it was too dangerous. |

I especially enjoyed where the VDF 'officer' used a photo of some guys in Europe playing with airsoft guns to portray some VDF guys in their 'off duty' time....classic. |

On paper, their mission makes total sense. Virginia has at its disposal a good number of emergency organizations coordinated by the DEM - ranging from the traditional (law enforcement, fire/rescue, and EMT) to specialized groups such as SAR organizations and the medical reserve. VDF fills an important role, being back-up to secure armories when the NG is deployed and augmenting NG and law enforcement by doing clerk/office work when necessary. A-OK with me. But they need to work on how they present themselves. Seriously, how many of us have seen the VDF table at the Nation's Gun Show and walked by quickly, trying to not make eye contact? They may be great people, but the herp and derp was pretty strong every time I've seen them. Having people that look like Mayor McCheese and Gomer Pyle's weaker twin don't really make a positive impression. |

I gotta pay more attention. |

I joined the VDF soon after it was formed. Being prior service with combat experience, they made me an E-6. What started out as a great idea went to hell in a handbasket. The Col. in charge was a moron of the first order. The Capt. was a ER. with over 20 years in, he had his shit together. The VDF did not provide any training other than close order drill, which gets old VERY fast. They supplied no uniforms or any thing. The officers were all ways on the enlisted for being out of uniform. How the hell can you be out of uniform if you were never issued one. I deserted after about 8 months of the Mickey Mouse crap. The VDF could do a fantastic job with any mission given to them if they had leadership and logistics that are so lacking now. |

I was just going to ask about this. A guy I know just posted on FB about a 24 hour FTX he just finished and I was curious with who until I saw VDF on his profile. He is not in any kind of shape so I checked their website to check requirements etc. how can you have a militia and not be allowed fire arms? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
