Hey, I'm planning on a trip to VA in late Oct. and figured I'd see if anybody over here had any suggestions.
The wedding itself is at Ft. Monroe. Friday night bachelor party, Saturday night rehersal, Sunday wedding and probably fly out Monday morning. I've got some friends that are flying into Norfolk on Friday, but I'm thinking that I may try to see some sights while I'm out. Anyhow, I'm thinking I'd like to go back to the Smithsonian Natural and American History Museums and more importantly the NRA Museum. It's been a good 15 years since I've been to any of them, so I'd like to check them out again. So, I'm thinking about flying into somewhere near the above museums on Wednesday, hit the Smithsonians Thursday, hit the NRA Museum Friday morning and drive the 3 hours south to Ft. Monroe Friday afternoon in a rental. Then do all the above mentioned wedding stuff and fly out of Norfolk with my friends. Anybody got any suggestions or see in red flags in my itenerary? Where would be the best place to fly into and stay for the first few nights? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

There is 3 different airports in the DC metro area. Regan National is the closet to the city but depending on price and carrier you can also fly to BWI(Baltimore) or Dullas(VA). I live in VA but usually take Southwest from BWI because of the baggage policy and BWI is usually the cheapest.
As for hotels, if you want to go to the NRA museum you will need a car to get there, stay OUTSIDE of the DC metro are for the cheapest rate. |

Also keep in mind that flying into and out of different airports may add considerably to your cost. You may be better off flying into Norfolk, then driving up to see what you want in NoVA. Check your prices. Yeah, I was going to do some checking. If it can save me 3 hours drive time though, that's definately worth a little coin to me. If it ends up being ridiculously higher, I might cahnge my mind... |

Fly into Norfolk rent a car (Enterprise car rental has a special on weekend rates its like $10 a day) and drive up, its cheaper to do that then to fly from one place or another, Norfolk to DC is about 2-2.5 hrs its not bad, you spend more time then that waiting for a plane and going through security for round trip.
NRA is in Fairfax, closest airport is IAD aka Dulles All the other museums are in DC closest is DCA aka Washington National BWI is far its about 45 min drive from there to the museums on a good day with no traffic. You can find good hotels cheap, outside of DC in Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax. Alot of the places have free parking as well. Most of the hotels in this area will charge like $20 per day for parking at some of the upscale hotels. what days are you coming to the area? |

This place is $119 a night with free parking and is right next to all the food and bars you can handle, its right outside of DC about 5 min drive and is 1 exit away from the Pentagon.
It also has a free shuttle to the metro so if you want to take the metro into dc you can. http://hiltongardeninn.hilton.com/en/gi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=DCAASGI |

or you can go to this hotel which is $89 a night and is about 20 mins from DC and 15 mins from NRA
its isolated by itself so food is not within walking distance.
