Gentlemen of the Commonwealth,
I will be starting a job in the District exactly one month from today. I am here this weekend looking for a place to live, and have committed myself to live in Virginia as it relates to my lifestyle, interests, and beliefs. I need a place in close, walking proximity to a Metro line stop. My sister (who lives in Eastern Market) and her friends say that Ballston and Clarendon would be great places to consider. I would appreciate any advice from anyone that can relate. Much appreciated, John |

You'd do better to move to the WV panhandle near Martinsburg and take the Marc train in. If you REALLY want to be close to DC though, be prepared for some major libtard asshattery. |
| As an Army brat from both sides of the family we have been in and out of the DC suburbs for most of my life. Hard Rock is dead right on the description of those areas. Just add very expensive with a heavy Latino influence as of late. It was not always so liberal as it is now. I hope your job pays extremely well. I am assuming your coming from TN,well welcome to one of the most expensive areas in the nation. Many on this HTF will attest to the fact that the local gas stations/convience stores in the eastern panhandle are packed with those of us hitting the road in the very early am to head back to work in the city. We enjoy the freedom to do what we want without having to deal with most of the Obamanation(see what I did there?). |

John, first off, welcome. We could always use more good guys behind enemy lines here in Northern Virginia. I assume that you are looking to rent, correct? How much are you looking to spend per month? How much space would you like? Thanks fellas, I will be renting for now as I cannot sell my current place in Memphis until Oct 2012 (stipulation of First Time Home Buyers). I can handle liberals just fine, I have prepared myself for the realization that living anywhere around the metro area will place myself in the land of the Left. If a complex has parking (preferred garage if the motorcycle makes the trip), washer/dryer in the unit, and is within 5 or so blocks to a Metro stop (highest priority), I am willing to pay up to $1600. Size of the unit doesn't bother me. I can handle an efficiency just fine. Do to my experiences with previous roommates and the nature of my new job, I will want to live alone for some time until I can meet some potentials and know if they are sound. |

I just rented a condo in Montebello in Alexandria. It's awesome here. Walking distance to Huntington Metro with a shuttle during rush hour. Indoor and outdoor pools, hot tub, bowling alley, pool tables, 24 hour security, and best of all....a bar There are one bedrooms in the 1450-1550 range and two bedrooms start at about 1700. The units are huge. PM me if you want more info. ETA: I commute to DC every day |

Lived near Court House metro stop for 8 years; it a great area particularly if you are single. THere are rental ops in your price range (thank you for being realistic; this area is certainly not inexpensive). I lived in Colonial Village; there were a few (very few) condos for rent that had garages; try the condo management office or Craigslist. Otherwise, there are many hi rises with garages around Court House & all along Wilson BLVD out to Balston. |

Hell I live only about 1 1/2 miles from the MARC train station here in the Eastern Panhandle of Wv and for $1,600 a month You would do fine in this area renting a home in Martinsburg. With the aging Population and all the Sub-divisions built around Martinsburg's outskirts a older home with all Your needs should be easy to find in Northern Martinsburg. Nice motorcycle riding in the Tri-State area also.......wvleo |

Ballston/Clarendon are convenient, but as others have mentioned, they are basically urban areas that are much more extensions of North West DC than they are like the rest of Virginia. In fact of course, they once were part of DC. Having said that, if you want to effectively live in the city, but without being in the District of Columbia, that's a good way to go. Another option is Alexandria or the Pentagon City area, which is basically similar.
Metro isn't the only way to get into DC, and it isn't even a particularly cheap way to get in. You can find monthly parking that isn't going to set you back much more than riding the subway. That will give you a lot more flexibility on where you live. Another option is to drive to Metro and then take the train. But that will cost more than just driving in and it means you have to be at the station quite early. The live-far-away-and-ride VRE option isn't IMHO a good option. VRE has the reputation for being unreliable and the trains don't run late enough for many private sector workers. That's sort of a common theme in DC public transport. It's designed by government workers for government workers. If your schedule isn't like that of .gov, it's a lot less helpful. I personally like the corridor that stretches down through Alexandria along the GW Parkway (staying reasonably far from Route 1, which can be iffy). It's relatively quiet and peaceful, affordable (for this area) and the GW Parkway south of Old Town Alexandria is a hidden shortcut into the city. My commute is 22 miles, and it takes 30-40 minutes door to door to Foggy Bottom. Oh yes, and if you have a CCW, be careful where you drive or which train you ride. One wrong turn or forgetting to leave it behind and you could be committing a felony in Maryland or DC. |
| I used to live in Belle Haven Towers, right next to Montebello in Alexandria. It was a decent place, but a little sketchy at night. Now I live over in Falls Church (really Merrifield), next to the Dunn Loring metro. Ballston is a nice area, but expensive. You can get a cheaper place a little further out, more towards Vienna or Falls Church, with a bit more room for the same price. |
|
I commute daily on the metro.
I'd suggest you look around the Vienna metro stop. It's about as far as you can get away from dc and still be close to metro. I live out in Centreville and the Fairfax connector busses run every 10-15 mins during rush hour and every 30-60 mins non rush. |

pm sent you get my message? Yes sir. But I ended up putting a deposit on a place in Navy Yard. I had to lock down a place this weekend before I left and decided to go with a place that I had seen (former fraternity brother lives there), was close to the metro, and fortunately picked up a sublease to save a little. When I have more time, I will start looking in the VA area. Until then, I'm stuck with the 1911 and the M1 garand. I called the firearms registration office and asked about ARs with 10rnd or less magazines and I would have thought he was asking for a trace on the number.
I would appreciate meeting up and getting some fresh air in a free state sometime. Also being shown the NOVA area would be great. |

Welcome to the area!
I just signed a lease agreement with Point of Alexandria aka Bartons Crossing Nice place and is secure, each apart has 1 or 2 garage parking spaces and each apartment has its own Alarm system with panic button in the bedroom. I picked this place over others because of security and the garage parking, Bike will be secure and when I lug my shooting gear from truck to apt it wont be out in the open.. here is the website. the place is maybe 10 mins or less from the 5 sided house of pain and Metro is around the corner. http://www.livebartonscrossing.com/ |

But I ended up putting a deposit on a place in Navy Yard. I. You do realize that besides the ball park and the stuff near 8th and I there's fuck all in the Navy Yard area, right? Well, except for a lot of plans and the new waterfront park is nice but still under development. Also, welcome to one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country. |

I currently work 1 city block from what was listed as the 12th most dangerous neighborhood in the US, I'll feel right at home. |

NAVY YARD isnt that bad, its actually inmproved a bit, just stay out of the crack house areas by Ft McNair.
Also why DC? the place is not gun friendly at all. Nice new developments but thats all, place is dead on the weekends unless a game is going on at the Nat Stadium. one good thing about that area are the huge weekend pool parties in the summer at the Capital Skyline Hotel on South Capital Street |

I've been living in the Clarendon area for about two years now and love it. Being able to walk to a metro, nightlife, and a grocery store are big bonuses. The only way I'm able to afford it is to split the rent three ways (myself, GF, and co-worker). I'd like to move outside the beltway but since she has no interest in driving we have to stay close to a metro.
Thanks to this site and VAguntrader I've connected to a lot of gun owners inside the beltway. I've also open carried in the area with no issues. The only downside here is range options. The NRA range is real nice but if you go on a weekend bring a good book while you wait on a lane. |

You can only buy ammo for guns that you own and not sure semiautos are allowed?
