Ok gang, I have been invited to go turkey shooting in April on some private land in Suffolk VA.
I was told I could hunt with a 22 from a stand. Is this true? Do I have to be on a stand? I reckon shotgun can be from the ground? Can I use my suppressor while hunting? Im sure I will have more questions as I think of them. thanks!! Ben |

A plain old PDF would be much better. Be sure to check the local restrictions. Suffolk may have issued some that are not on the DGIF site. |

In VA, turkeys are considered big game and by law, one must use a caliber larger than .22 for hunting big game. I'm not familiar w/ the county where you plan to hunt, but make sure that they allow rifle hunting. Also, in my experience, spring gobbler hunting is best on the ground and then you would want to use a shotgun w/ turkey loads.

I seem to remember that .225 was the lowest caliber allowed for hunting large game. Plus, I'm not sure but I would think the VDGIF website would spell out the specifics for either archery or shotgun during turkey season.
Also I would love to have a shotgun with a suppressor, that would rock downtown. |

I know the question is about Turkey, but we need to be careful here. Some are saying "big game" then quoting minimum caliber for all big game as something less than .23 caliber, which would be very illegal. Deer and Bear require .23 caliber or larger, as outlined in the regs. I think rifle hunting turkey requires a centerfire cartridge of .224 or bigger. I seem to remember a friend of mine liking a .221 Fireball to kill them. |
