Hi all my CCW comes up for renewal in about four months. I wanted to ask a few questions.

Will they send me paper work to do again?

Will I have to be finger printed again?

When should I get paper work or be on the look out for it?

I guess just ell me the process as this is my first time of having to renew it. Its hard to believe 5 years has went so fast

I am not sure if all cities or counties are the same.   That being said, here in Hampton all I had to do is go back to the Circuit Court Clerks office and refill out the paperwork and give them your 50 bucks and they mail you your new one.    I was told to renew your permit about 2 months before it actually expired.  This was to ensure that your existing permit doesnt expire before you recieve your new one.    And no you shouldnt have to be fingerprinted again.

Im in Harrisonburg.

Yeah I dont want it to over lapse each other and all that mess. I guess I could open carry until it came in if that happend but I just like to take care of it.

I was also thinking of doing it 2-3 months ahead of time.

Thanks for the help and if anyone else knows let me know.

You better give it two months to be sure.  I went to the Clerks Office, paid $50 and got my form.  I filled it out and took to Sheriff's Department.  They got all their parts done, and it went back to the Clerk's Office.  The Commonwealth's Attorney and a Judge signed off on it, and it went back to the Clerk's Office where they had a card printed up and then called me to come by and get it.  Due to delays on their part, mine actually ran out, but the lady there said that my paid receipt would cover me, but I did not chance it.  I got it a week later and all is well.  I did not have to fingerprint again or do anything else.  Oh, and they will not mail you the form or anything else letting you know it is expiring soon.  It's all on you to keep up with it.

No - it's up to you to remember to renew, they will not do a thing to remind you.

Will I have to be finger printed again?

No - that requirement is no longer valid. Please let the VCDL know if they try and make you do it.

When should I get paper work or be on the look out for it?

The new permit will take effect on the expiration date of your old one, so you don't lose time by doing it early. You can do it up to 6 months early. (if my memory is correct)  From the time you drop it off, they have a MAXIMUM of 45 days to issue the new permit - again, please let the VCDL know if they take longer. (you DO know about the VCDL - right?)

It's just like the first application, but your proof of training is the current permit.

Take care,
Bob S.

Thank you and the one main point you pointed out is what I was looking for "they wont let you know" that is what I was thinking would happen. I was told you will get a letter in the mail.

Thanks everyone I will get on this at the end of the month or first part of it as Im good till may.

Even though most people don't like this Internet training for a CWP, they do have a free service to E-mail you a reminder to renew your permit.
