I just got some from our Senator!
So, I sent off an email asking him to support the CC in National Parks Amendment attached to a credit/finance bill of all things, and here is the response: Dear Mr. XXXXXXXXXX, Thank you for contacting me regarding my support for Senator Coburn's amendment (S.Amdt. 1067) about guns in national parks. As we work in the Senate to meet the enormous challenges facing this country, including efforts to strengthen our economy, create new jobs, and establish energy independence, your views and those of your fellow Virginians are very important to me. I am honored to serve Virginia as your United States Senator. My top priority in the Senate is to provide efficient and effective constituent service to all Virginians. Please be sure that my office will review your comments carefully as I consider and vote on relevant legislation. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your views with me. As we move forward in the 111th Congress, please continue to be in touch with your opinions and concerns. Sincerely, MARK R. WARNER United States Senator Wow. Now thats pretty dang underwhelming. At least he could've told me to go sit and spin or something along those lines... |

Why doesn't he just say "Thanks for wasting your time sending me this message that one of my staffers will read and decide is not important enough to make it to my desk. I will continue to do whatever the hell I want, because we, the US Senate (and our friends in the House) are no longer concerned with actually representing your viewpoints in this Republic form of government. We will continue to do what we think is best for you from atop our perch...where we pay no social security, get free medical benefits, and are assured a lifetime of retirement income for our service (however short it may be) that is far and above what 90% of Americans could hope to achieve while working 10 times as hard. Bend over...here it comes."
Nah....the truth wouldn't get 'em re-elected. |

Dear Mr. XXXXXXXXXX, This reply is to confirm that the internet is still up and working. Just thought I'd let you know. Sincerely, MARK R. WARNER United States Senator

Never have gotten anything back from Webb. Never. I've gotten responses from Webb, months after writing... and it's essentially the same as Warner's. Just a copy/paste response touching upon a bunch of vague issues which likely has nothing to do with what you've written about. So, see Glock27Bill's post above showing the "Warner response" and just change the name at the bottom. Same deal. |

This raises a point that was discussed in a recent VCDL meeting.
The preferred methods of contacting your elected representatives (in order from worst to best) are: Email: As seen by this post, they are the easiest to mismanage by the recipient. Minimal effort is required to reply/file/delete en masse. Letters: While these take a little more effort than emails to digest and process, they also get stuck in the mail room as they are screened for other substances that they may contain. Delivery is greatly delayed. Post cards: Better than letters. They go right through the system to your representatives' offices, since they are not sealed. Phone Calls: Best method. While any of the other methods allow their aides to deal with them as time allows, a phone must be answered real-time. The time consumed by an aide on the phone by all of us swamping their offices with our pro-legally armed citizen calls are impossible to ignore. The time taken to talk to us means that other things are not getting done, which gets the attention of the boss. (Thanks, Phil. Great advice, as always). |
