Anne Holton, wife of Tim Kaine, gave the guest address. It was nothing but cliche, over-used advice about volunteering, and relentless plugs about how her father Linwood Holton and husband have saved Virginia, and how Obama is going to save the world with Tim's help as DNC chairman after his term as governor ends.

Particularly interesting was her back-to-back praise of Obama, and how Israel requires people to volunteer.

Never you mind, though, that the messiah has refused to support - even opposed - Israel's right to defend itself. But I digress.

Even more interesting was - and this was announced to the crowd - how they refused to shake the students' hands as they crossed the stage because of......

(Ready for this?)

.....Swine flu.

Yes, we'll pack everybody - students, faculty, visitors, family and guests - ridiculously close together, but because of pig flu there won't be any hand shaking.

Wow. Just...... Wow.

and you expected a different direction in her speech??

So, why were you at the graduation?  Family?  Dating a coed that your wife doesn't know about??

I didn't even know Virginia needed saving. The line about Israel requiring volunteer service is troubling as it suggests a desire to implement such a policy here.

If it's mandatory, how can it be voluntary? Liberal logic, I don't get it.

Which part of having a good portion of the adult population familiar with armed and unarmed combat is a bad thing?

Brother's graduation.

I actually didn't find out she was the speaker until today. I kicked myself for not thinking to find out first who it was going to be. An iPod would have been MUCH appreciated...

It's not really volunteering if it's "required."

When these Dimocraps start that crap, I think we need correct them by saying what they really mean is that it's mandatory service...kind of like the draft.  But I think they're kind of confused on the draft.  Half of them hate and fear the military and don't want anything to do with it.  The other half all want the military to be some sort of mandatory punishment for rich kids.

Sorry to read about the speaker, but to be honest, these things usually lack substance.

I graduated from Catholic University Law last year; we had Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito as our commencement speaker.   It was a nice ceremony (at the Shrine of The Immaculate Conception), but damned if I can remember what he said.

Mine was the best. I don't remember who it was, or what he said other than "I'll keep this short. None of you are going to remember it anyway. I don't remember mine."

Isnt MW a VERY liberal school?

When will people realize that there is a time and a place for soapbox speeches.

Probably because it's a liberal arts school.

I graduated from MWC in '99. The Speaker was a libtard then as well. Still makes me smile to think that my group of friends founded a gun club and succeeded in getting the administration to fund it.

My lovely wife is from Fredericksburg and I was in town last weekend.  I try to stay as far away as possible from that liberal, hippy ass, tax payer funded, socialist, overpriced, liberal arts school.

The only good thing about that school is the occasional hottie jogging on the sidewalk.  (I noticed this before I was married)

Fredericksburg itself is getting sucked into Northern Virginia and pretty soon will have lost all of it's conservative values.  The old downtown with it's rich historical Cival War history is all but gone.  It's been replaced by fancy stores selling Vera Bradley hand bags and wine tasting shops.  The people who come to visit are only concerned about what wine pairs well with the cheese they are eating.

The Marines from Quantico who visit on Sundays with their family's in thier Dress Blues are looked down upon by the student body of Mary Washington and the local lefty's.

Virginia is already a blue state now.  It won't be long before the new laws and restrictions will be coming.  Kaine is the most liberal lieing bastard next to Obama.  During the election he actually ran an ad for Obama saying that like him, Obama supports gun owners rights and that Obama didn't want new restrictions.  Kaine has the most liberal voting record on guns in Virginia.

The Great Commonwealth is going down the same failing path as our country unfortunatley.

Paulie,

My brother-in-law is graduating from Catholic U this year with his Canon Law degree.  You may know him.

Lear60,

If he went to the Columbus School of Law, I may very well know him.  I did Intellectual Property Law, but we all have to take the same core classes.  Also, I attended part time at night, so I did not get to know too many day students.

Drop me a line with his name if you'd like.  ....Paulie

Funny, my wife is also from Fredericksburg and her parents now live in Spotsy.  My BIL was taking classes at UMW and he's pretty conservative; i don't know how his head didn't explode.  I'm afraid you may be right (above) and that means I have to pick up and move.  There is no cure for the liberal virus.

1.  A number of years ago George Allen spoke at my wife's law school graduation and from what I recall he said virtually nothing about politics.  He did talk about how to be a good lawyer and how to deal with judges.

2.  Stenny Hoyer spoke at my wife's PhD graduation (nearly 20 year ago).  The main point of his talk: the deficit was way too high!  (This is back when the original Pres. Bush was in office and the Federal deficit was around $75 billion...about 4 percent the size of the deficit Stenny Hoyer is ramming through Congress this year).

I am not sure that any non religious college has any commencement speeches that aren't oozing with liberalism anymore. I just recently went to the Lynchburg College graduation and there were all kinds of those buzz words and phrases that libs love using. "giving back to your community," "protecting the environment," etc etc. One of the first people actually had the crowd face each direction while she said a prayer to the gods of some Indian tribe that was having a brouhaha on the same day. I was the only one that I saw that refused to face in the direction she was talking about. Then of course she mentioned Obama and how great he was and his inauguration was like the super bowl and blah blah blah. She apparently started some non profit agency to help the "poor and underpriviledged" have access to art or some crap. All I could think is, why don't you start a business that allows these "poor and underpriviledged people" to better their lives financially so they can pursue art if they so desire, instead of encouraging them to hold on to the status quo and remain "poor and underpriviledged."

Say what you will about Liberty University, but their speakers have been the likes of Chuck Norris, Ben Stein, and other conservatives who encourage the students to be independent, to enhance their faith, and stand strong on their beliefs etc.

I graduated from Mary Wash.  It is a very liberal place, but you don't have to look very hard to find good people.  I belonged to the school gun club, and we went shooting once a month at the Range at stafford.  Just like any liberal arts school, take as few sociology classes as humanly possible and you'll be fine.

At my school the commencement speaker my junior year was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.  Pretty good speech.  Lots of protective detail all over (this was in 2000, pre 9/11).  Hard dude.

My graduation got the President of NASCAR.

It was at least a Christian college in name, though there was still plenty of liberal nonsense to go around.
