Hello Guys

I have just escaped the INSANITY that is New York City and I plan on buying at least three sbr's and a few suppressors.  I was wondering if you guys could recommend an NFA Trust Attorney so I could set up a trust.  I live in NoVa, so I may have ass pain from the Chief LEO so I thought a trust would solve that for me.  If anyone could recommend a good NFA Lawyer I would appreicate it.

Thanks

EDIT: I USED MIKE COUSTER IN MCLEAN AND HE IS AWESOME I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM

I used Quicken Willmaker.

Currently have 3 suppressors.

Got 2 SBRs in the works now.

I can't really give you a meaningful figure...  it was a few years ago, she had her own practice at the time (she is now a partner in a larger firm) and she was modifying a pre-existing trust for me.

Just give her a ring for an estimate.

Hey Guys Ashley Brooks wanted $1500 for the Trust.  I was wondering if anyone had a cheaper option or used an Attorney who was cheaper

Wow. I was under the impression that most lawyers that did nfa trusts wanted around 600 for them.

I've got a friend who is in Arlington and looking at an SBR.  Does anyone in Arlington sign or is he stuck with the "Trust Route?"

I think Arlington requires a "home inspection" then they will sign if you have a safe. They may not do that anymore, or that could of been Alexandria ...

For the purpose of transferring SBRs/cans, I don't see why you wouldn't just use Quicken Willmaker.

The ATF approved the transfer for the M11/can to the trust, then went after the guy for the F1. I think its a safe assumption that the person in question changed something about the trust in between the first and second transfers that invalidated it.  If your going to skip the lawyer and use Quicken Willmaker, at least leave the final product the same.

I would definitely like to know more details about this case.

Why do you think it's a safe assumption? My guess is that ATF simply missed the problem the first time, or nobody there reviewed it carefully, and this person just got away with it on the first transfer.

I seriously doubt that there's anyone at the ATF Examinations Branch that's qualified to review a trust for its legality.

Give Michael a call and he will square you away.  He does a lot of trusts and knows all about it.  He will go over everything and then have a draft of the trust to you in PDF format for review.  Once you agree to any changes you are good to go.

I used Quicken Willmaker and the step by step instructions in the other Topic. It was a breeze. The software cost me about $35 and my bank did the notary for free.

If you pay attention to detail and triple check your paperwork, you can't go wrong.

This might be true, but when it comes to the ATF, I want to make sure ALL of the details are  exactly right. Its a small price for piece of mind....YMMV

I know Fairfax signs but they are saying they need 3 to 4 weeks before they return my paperwork to me. I can not figure out why they need that long. Nothing they do takes more then 10 to 30 mins to do so why 3 to 4 weeks??? They also want to know about my home security and such which I have no problems talking to them face to face, so I know who gets this info, but dropping the paperwork and trusting it makes it to the right person before somebody sees it that I don't want seeing it is another thing. I don't like writing down weapon types, address, and type of security that will sit around a jail for 3 weeks. Who knows where and who can look over these forms during that time. I'm thinking of doing the trust thing now because of this over long and not needed wait time. Plus I have to wait 3-4 weeks every time I do one. Maybe I should just make a call tomorrow to a lawyer and cut out the local CLEO thing all together. Does anybody know how much lawyers will charge to just review a NFA trust to make sure there are no issues?

Drafted and used by me to obtain a NFA item.  I am not a lawyer, but then again I am not charging $650.

However, my membership does expire this month, so . . . hint, hint

NOT a crappy WillMaker version, but handcrafted by me at great time and expense.  I can answer any questions BY EMAIL ONLY  Please keep in mind that you will have to tweak it for your own circumstances and again - I am more than happy to help you figure out what tweaks are needed.

Maryland_Shooter's 100% Free Sample Trust

Also, if there is a member who has a Trust drafted by a lawyer, I would really, really like to have a look at it.  It can only improve my sample and thereby help each and every member who wants to use a Trust.  Any information is always held in the strictest confidence.

I don't want to advertise for any particular lawyer in Virginia, but using an office supply store trust, or a trust off this forum prepared by a non-lawyer seems RISKY.  Given the differences in state laws, as well as the NFA requirements that may not matter at the creation of a trust –– but can surface later, its asking for trouble to use an amateur trust.

Besides getting a trust that is proven to be "right" under the laws of Virginia and the regulations of the ATF, a skilled trust lawyer 1/ gets you up to speed on the use of the trust, 2/ advises on decisions such as bank accounts and storage issues, and 3/ is available for transaction questions later on.  The $500 for a professional trust and these related services seems about right, particularly compared to some non-NFA lawyers accustomed to charging $1000 or more for a routine revocable trust.  (Did someone post a lawyer that wanted $1500??!!)

There is a peace of mind factor in knowing that you have professional work done.  Of course, some people would buy a "Do it yourself home dentistry" kit.

Just one lawyers thoughts....

So you're not a lawyer, but you're handing out a trust and offering to answer any questions and help craft it for people? And you're soliciting samples of real attorneys'  work product so you can secretly attempt to assimilate it?
