I am going to be in VA Beach here very soon due to a Military Transfer.  My question is will I still be allowed to purchase Firearms in VA even though my Residency will still be Florida?  Just curious about this.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Someone else can chime in to verify this but if you are stationed in VA on active duty we consider you a resident and yes you then can buy a firearm.

And there's a bill sitting on the Governor's desk that would exempt active duty military from the one-handgun a month as well.... if he signs it.

We need some more information first.

To start, nothing will prohibit you from taking possession of a long gun.  Even if you were a Florida civilian visiting Virginia, you could buy a long gun here.

Handguns are for state residents only, though, per the Gun Control Act of 1968.  However, you are considered (regarding firearm purchases) to be a resident of the jurisdiction wherein your military orders place you.

Translated –– your official orders put you in Virginia?  You're considered a Virginia resident and can purchase a handgun.

However, military personnel need to supply a somewhat different set of identification when doing this.  Military personnel will need to provide:

- "Home state" Driver's License (in your specific case, your Florida license)

- Military ID (CAC Card)

- A copy of your military orders which place you inside Virginia

- Documentation which shows your physical address in Virginia (such as a utility bill, lease agreement, etc.) and has your name on it.

I think that's all of it, but I'm having an "off" day, so I might have missed something in that list of IDs.

I am retired military, but came to Virginia just as the original poster assigned on military orders and with a California DL to boot.  MaH above is 100% correct regarding the required documents needed to purchase firearms in Virginia.

By the way welcome to Tidewater.

Navy-

First off, welcome to the Commonwealth of VA!  Mah is 100% correct.  Once you have something showing you have a VA address you are GTG (with the other documents listed above).

Enjoy that Hampton Roads traffic.
