Hey guys! I finally joined the site after lurking for over a year or so. After I assembled my first lowers using the instructions here I decided it was time to finally join.

I'm near Roanoke. Where're you Southwest VA guys shooting these days?

Welcome

I'm not sure where guys shoot down there...  In fact, I am looking for a place to shoot near my cabin in Lebanon...

Welcome, I've been in the same boat. Been lurking for a while and joined a little while back to start tracking down some parts for a 6.8 build I'm doing. I'm in the Roanoke area as well, and unfortunately the only public ranges within a decent drive are out 311 about 30min drive, and down 460 bout equal distance, both of which are Jefferson National Forest ranges. I prefer the one off 460 as the one off 311 has its lanes facing the setting sun which can be quite bothersome. We should get some guys together and go out to one of these rangea for an ARFcom shoot/gathering.

Longshot - when I lived in Roanoke (now living out towards blacksburg) the Roanoke Izaak Walton Range was pretty nice. Nothing amazing but for $75 a year, it was a pretty nice deal to shoot whenever you wanted and have access to a pond.

I should check it out. What is the maximum range down there? Is it listed in the hometown ranges section?

Its been years since I have been back there - I know it goes to at least 100 maybe even 200. It may have been expanded since then.

I know that Roanoke Rifle and Revolver has a really good Range that goes to 500.

Yeah, I looked into them, but they are fairly expensive. I might just have to fork out the cash on that one. Oh and I picked up a new Bushy today. Near complete, just needs a new buffer tube and a few springs. $400 Not a bad deal, especially these days.

$400!?!?! I hate you

I'm trying to find an Upper to complete my build with little success... mind sharing your secret with me :)

Welcome aboard, Bro!

If you're near Blacksburg, consider joining the Shawnee Club, which has a nice range near Newport, a few minutes from where 42 crosses 460.  One of the regulars here (I'll let him dime himself out) is a member, I was until I moved a little further up the road.

Hey Bonk! Thanks! My Dad was a member of the Shawnee Club - we've been thinking about rejoining, its a nice setup.

I think I accidently hit report (meant to hit reply was going to fast) on your post Bonk! I need to get to sleep!

I'm in Forest and the same boat at you. Purchased and built my lower, looking at uppers or parts to build my own. Was too late at the Salem show, hopefully can find something next weekend at the Roanoke show.

Will probably join the Issac Walton League range here in Lynchburg this Spring.

No harm done, dude, no nastygrams yet.

I just ate dinner with one of the Shawnee board members two days ago, and they are taking new members.  I'd rejoin, but the range is over an hour from my house.

Rookie - the salem show was pretty crummy in my opinion. Maybe Roanoke will be better. My Girlfriend's family lives in Forrest we should get together sometime and shoot!

Bonk - thanks for letting me know, I think I'll join Shawnee here in the new year!

Ronin, My AR is only a lower now. I recently picked up a SKS but haven't joined a club yet so I can shoot it. My transmission is on the fritz .. so I may not be able to get an upper till the next Salem show, order it online or find one at the 2nd Roanoke show in April (I think).  Would love to hook up with someone to atleast help me in going in the direction I want to go.  Like my name implies .. I am a rookie with these, but wanna learn so I can do it right the first time.

Rookie - I just completed my first two lower builds, I'm also looking for an Upper as you are! I'll be happy to help with anything you might need but I'm sure there are a lot of guys on here with much more know-how!

Shoot me an IM and maybe we can meet up at the next gun show.

Another NRV shooter sounding off here! I'm down in Christiansburg and usually go to the Forest Service Range out on 460. I'm busy trying to decide what my next gun is going to be. I'm torn between an M1 Carbine, the VZ-58, an SKS, a K-31, some bolty .308, or whatever strikes my fancy.
Hope to see some of you at the Salem show later this month.

Welcome Ronin.  SW VA is a wonderful area to live, I'm jealous.  Spent my college days down that way!

I skipped the Roaonoke show after seeing reports here that it sucked.  I'll go to the Salem show, particularly if the weather is bad out.

I'll be skipping the Salem show.  We're leaving for Charlotte, NC on the 17th to stay overnight and fly out on the 18th.  Gotta head where its nice and warm. Should be sipping Rum punches on the beaches of Aruba on the 19th.
