Better prepared than sorry. Danny National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield: Please access the following link to view locality/area specific information: Weather Link: NWS Wakefield Emergency Management Page The current weather situation is complicated by 2 separate systems. First is a coastal front which will work its way NW across Eastern VA between Thursday morning and late afternoon Thursday. The most severe weather we will experience will come from this system. The second system is off the SC coast and is of tropical character. Effects from this 2nd system should remain south of the VA/NC border. The first system has been influenced by high pressure off New England which has caused the increase in winds we’ve seen over the last 24 hours. This will continue to increase from South to North into tonight. A High Wind Warning exists for the Hampton Roads area. A Coastal Flooding warning exists along the Chesapeake Bay and DelMarVa peninsula. Some areas are under a Gale Warning as well. Coastal flooding will be seen from Mathews County north between now and this time tomorrow afternoon. Winds should drop off by late afternoon tomorrow. Flooding we will see should be minor to moderate; somewhere between the effects of Hanna and Ernesto. Higher tides than Hanna should be expected. From Middlesex to the Northern Neck situation is more complicated as the winds and tide will not be higher but may be sustained at a high level for a longer period of time due to the coastal system preventing the water from receding quickly. It may be Saturday before they drop back down. Winds in the Hampton Roads area should be around 30-40 mph with gusts to approximately 60 mph tonight. North of that area winds should be 20-30 mph with gusts to 50mph. Winds will weaken inland. Winds should drop considerably by early afternoon tomorrow. Northern Neck and Chincoteague areas may see winds higher until late afternoon. Rain should be a non-issue at 1-2 inches. Q: the second weather situation in SC - is this projected to provide rain further North? A: Yes – the track is NW and then N from Friday into early Saturday with the bulk of the rain West of I-95, although some scattered showers and thunderstorms could be seen East of I-95. A couple inches could be seen in west and northern VA. Still a little early to know precisely. Should be no flood threat with this one. |
I'm heading to Emerald Isle with the family Friday.... Guess I better get my floaties out.
