| does anyone know how to get ahold of the dealer Dark Sun that is usually seen at the gunshows in Norfolk, Richmond, and Hampton gun shows? |
Yes that's the correct info. They have a shop in their home in Chesterfield. I've bought plenty of guns from them without any problem. |
+1 I think some people look down on them cause of the tattoo's and what not. Good folks, may not always be the super friendliest people in the world. But they will always answer a question if you have one and let you know what they have. |
| I don't really thing the complaints come from their fashon choices. I think it stems more from their fluctuating moods. They can go from very friendly, to extemely rude within a very short timespan. I've had good dealings with them for the most part, so I buy when I find a good deal. |
I have bought a ton of stuff from Dave and Rod. They always cut me a good deal!!! |
Heard a story about them, lady was there trying to buy a gun for her boyfriend, blatant straw purchase. So the dude with blonde hair says to her "I'm sorry ma'am, but you'll have to go to that State Police officer over there and ask him how to conduct a straw purchase" I LOL'd. Don't know if it's true or not, but sounds like something they'd say! |
|
I have purchased a lot from them over the past 12 years. I have always had a good experience and always paid the lowest price. They are not a "full service" dealer so don't expect a three hour conversation with them on the pros and cons of buying a full size XD-40 -vs- a Glock 22 or what model AK would make a better "truck gun" but if you know what you want, are agreeable to the stated price and are ready to buy (including having your two forms of ID with you) they will take care of the rest. More than once I have seen them turn down cash from anything that even starts to smell like a straw purchase. (I like that) I too have seen them send the disgruntled party to speak with the nearest the LEO with any objection. Do not Dry fire a gun on the table without asking them first. They are strict about this for two very good reasons; 1) Nobody wants to buy a gun after they watched Bubba just finish finger raping the poor thing (I'll take the one in the box under the table, please) 2) Nothing makes a dealer (or myself cringe) like watching some jackass with your gun in his hand, pointing it everywhere (but a safe direction) with their finger on the trigger. Some here have had issues with Dark Sun and I don't doubt their story but I highly recommend them. |
Absolutely V-GN.. I am not the moral police. Not my job. I could really care less about how their hair is cut or how much they wish to decorate their body. Cut me a good deal on something I want to purchase and be polite and I would buy it if they had purple hair and an Ipod implanted in their forearm. I have been a customer when they were at the old Show at the Safeway in Sterling and I have purchased from them this year. Keep up the competitive prices and the huge selection and I will stay a customer. |
|
I've gotten some good C&R type stuff from them before. They typically are the cheapest, but more importantly, they have more stock than anyone. To me, this is important when shopping for C&R guns as between piece W, X, Y, or Z of a specific model on the table, there will definately be a heirarchy of condition. THEY do not look for it, almost all are priced the same. My best haul from them was a Yugo M59 (not 59/66) that was nearly unfired under a few layers of cosmo. I had been looking for one for a long time, and examined more than 20 over many shows time before I selected the one I chose. You really cannot do that with another vendor. Of course, the risk is that supply runs dry before you have picked 'the best'. The main people have a terrible bedside manor, but some of the middle aged guys who occasionally help are extremely friendly. If I'm forced to deal with the bipolar guys, so be it, I'm not shopping for friends... Their tempers are directly related to two main factors. 1) how long the instant check lineup is 2) how stupid (in their eyes) the customers are |
|
I've purchased maybe 6 guns from them, they're OK. I walked by their booth at a show once expceting them to recognize me, probably stupid on my part as they always have a long line of background checks going through, so I guess I'm just another face in the crowd. No big deal, as has been said, great selection and always lots of inventory. They've always been fine through the purchase process. I'd gladly give them more business. |
I too have bought a lot from them to include my Rock River lower and Crimson Trace Grips for my 1911 as well as a lot of magazines. They seem to always have decent prices on magazines especially Glock magazines. |
|
For those not aware, Jim Jarret is his dad. Jim was even better to deal with (IMO) but went under with Bloomberg's "sting" operation. I'd guess that might have something to do with the straw purchase nervousness : ![]() Tho, I'd be nervous about that stuff anyways and don't blame them. |
That's goofy. It's less paperwork for them than a 4473. Thanks for the info, saved me the trouble. |
|
They were rude to me the first gun show I went to, probably because of my lack of knowledge on ID requirements. I understand why they can be cranky though, they deal with some knuckleheads. Only person to actually pick up on what the symbol on my Arfcom hat was. They have been cool to me since though. I have purchased two firearms from them, very happy with my purchases and prices. Their ink doesn't bother me, has to be thousands of dollars of an investment. I like it when the woman who works for them wears shorts so you can see the ink on her leg. |
| They have always been nice when ever I went over to talk with them. The phone conversation I had was very pleasant and he was willing to work with me on getting the XD I am looking for. I am going to his place next week to pick it up so I will know more by then, but I cannot forsee any issues. I think a lot of those guys at the shows have good and bad days. I can understand why when you see some of the crazy stuff people do and say. I usually try a vendor at least twice just to make sure they were not having an off day. It happens to everyone... |
Was that "Patriot Arms"? |
Something similiar like that happened to me. He asked why I wanted 2 SKS's. I said I want one for me and a backup to loan my brother on occassion. He went on some stupid spiel about how I could get in trouble blah blah blah. If I wanna fu<K up and do something illegal its my business, not yours. Sell me the dammed guns. Because of that, they no longer get my business |
They used to accept my C&R (many years ago) but no longer. They told me that they had some ATF grief over an altered C&R or a holder who was not able to back-up the transfer on their "book" (ie; the C&R holder wasn't keeping a proper book). They didn't go into great detail but suffice to say that with the amount of ATF scrutinty these guys receive (and with the volume of sales they do each month, I am sure they are under a microscope) they wanted simplify their record keeping. Simply a business decision on their part, I wouldn't take it as a personal insult. |
|
I watched a guy do a C&R purchase on a 1911 at Dark Sun, when I asked at the next show if they would do a C&R on a Mosin the guy looked at me like I was a tool for even asking. If he didn't want to make the sale that's fine with me, but the rude attitude was unacceptable. I'll never buy from them after that. |
| I'm a Maryland resident with a C&R & lots of other IDs in hand but they wouldn't give me the time of day when I wanted to buy one of their Yugo SKSs. The guy went into a rant about Maryland, that I was stupid for living there, and wouldn't sell me the SKS even if an ATF Agent was standing there and said it was OK to do so. Screw 'em. |
| My favorite thing about those tools is how the always had new "pre-ban" AR's and "pre-ban" used glock mags with the new replacement aftermaket mag bodies, all at "great deals" during the AWB. If they got caught selling fake "pre-bans" that they assembled, the ATF would confiscate the guns or mags, but if you bought it you were in possession of an illegal assault weapon, and looking at a federal crime. They are shady and I would never deal with them. I stay away from trouble, them included. |
| I have bought from them twice. They had the best price and I knew exactly what I wanted so there wasn't too much interaction other than bartering price... They already had the best price so I wasn't expecting anything but they still worked with me. Well one would... I agree they aren't very tolerant with questions. Being a newb on ARs that is rough for me and makes me go else where to spend my $$. But if I know what I want EXACTLY I wont hesitate to ask them for a price on it... But I wont even stop by their booth if I have questions... |
Reminds me of when I went to Richmond (from Fairfax) to work the VCDL booth. It was my first time working that show. A couple of the members were wondering how many guys they would see taken out in handcuffs that day. I asked them what they were talking about. Apparently, there are some felons out there that don't realize that background checks are done when purchasing a gun. Sure enough, about 1/2 hour later, I saw a perp walk. Idiots. |

If it weren't for the fact that I'm cheap but like expensive guns I would not frequent their table. I am a female who made the mistake of going to the table with my boyfriend first and then, after looking around and deciding I wanted to purchase the sig on their table, going back without the boyfriend (who happens to be FLEO). I pointed to the gun and said I'd like to purchase that. He asked me what it was? I must have looked totally confused, I repeated my statement as did he. I said "its a sig sauer P220, 45 caliber, in stainless steel, with rails and hogue grips" he then asked me to rack the slide. finally after straining the muscles in my neck racking the slide on a brand new 45 (as much as I would like to be strong like bull i am not); i put it on the table. then he asked me if i've ever fired a 45. i said "yes, my boyfriend has the same gun, i like it so much I want one of my own" he finally agreed to sell it to me. while waiting for whatever he points to my shirt and says "whats that shield?" i said "its the West Point shield" |

Bought a few things from them. Never had a problem. Go to the table, look at what they have, see how much they want for it. Go elsewhere and compare. If you want to buy from them, hang around, ask if you can pick your rifle. Take it, fill the paperwork, and go. If you know what you're looking at and how much it's worth they're a good crew. Especially if you want to get whatever's cheap at Century these days. |
Yup, Jim Jarret = Patriot Arms. Used to do $10 transfers, but charge sales tax.
As for the SKS for your brother ... dude, that just smells of a sting like his dad got bit by.... |
|
when I was new to guns, they told me I couldnt even hold their shitty WASR because I wasnt 21, and you "need to be 21 to buy an assault rifle, so dont touch it". I went and paid 25$ more at another table. came back with the WASR in my hand and looked over their stuff casually. fuck them. I will never give them my business. ever. |
Pretty much. First time I dealt with them was great. Surly, accusatory, ill-mannered the second time I dealt with them. Gave contradictory info about payment, and then balked at their own requirements. Probably won't deal with them again. |
Good comparison! |
