I am moving to Virginia from Florida and have a few questions regarding the carry permit. I have looked on the VA state website for some info already.
What is with the county or city of residence to issue? IS it valid state wide?
Will my FL CCW meet the state requirements for th application of the VA permit?

The county or city issues the permit and it is good statewide.  for example, enclosed is the link for fairfax county, http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/courts/circuit/SP-248.htm.

I think that if you had to take some firearms or safety course and have proof of the course and the FL permit, you should be good to go.  Unclear if just the FL permit would work, some possibilities:

* Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in this Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause;

* Completing any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state certified or National Rifle Association certified firearms instructor;

* Completing any other firearms training which the court deems adequate.

Obtain your driver's license asap,  need to establish residence for 30 days and the permit process should be <45 days by law. Open carry is allowed without a permit, with a few expections (Schools, churches, courts, marked private property, etc.)

If you have a specific area that your looking at, post or check that districts website for more info.

Took a course taught by an NRA instructor years ago in order to get the FL permit. I will be living in Woodbridge (Price William County) for the time being and working in the Arlington area. Is it legal to carry or posess a firearm in the Arlington area? I only ask because of the close proximity to DC. Open carry? Interesting

With the course you should be good to go.  The drive from Woodbridge to Arlington can be tough, check out carpools, buses, and what are called Sluglines.  Once you do the drive a couple of times, you'll see why.

Yes its legal to carry or possess a firearm in Arlington, that being said, there are a number of Government buildings and the airport is in Arlington.  Suggest that you be discrete around some of the numerous military installations in Arlington.

For more information on open carry see http://www.opencarry.org in the VA section for more info.  There are numerous open carry events in the area.  Also suggest that you check out http://www.vcdl.org, good local organization for 2nd amendment rights.

Virginia has statewide preemption and uniform laws for the most part.

Carrying rifles openly is not allowed in more densely populated areas without a concealed handgun permit.

The Potomac River seerates Virgina from Washington, DC, and while Arlington county was once part of the District of Columbia it is once again part of Virginia.

Arlington might not be the beat place to open carry since it is a very liberal area, but open carry of handguns is allowed.

Thanks for the info guys, I only ask because here in FL the CCW permit is issued by the state (Dept. of Agriculutre) and is valid state wide and open carry is not allowed. Not that I plan on carrying openly, but it is nice to know. By the way what is the concensus on Quantico Arms, I notice they have a store front in Woodbridge.

Here is a link to the Virginia code section covering concealed weapons.

Note that in Virginia the permits are only good for handguns.

If you haven't already secured housing in the Hoodbridge area, and you want some help staying away from "areas you are increasing your chance to USE your CCW", IM me.
