I read that if you are purchasing a handgun within your own state that you do not have to ship it to an ffl. Is that true?

If this has already been posted somewhere i apologize. My computer is not running well and I haveing trouble searching.

I'm not sure I understand your question so:

If you are buying a handgun from a private party (in your state) you do not have to go through an FFL.

If you are buying a handgun from a private party (not in your state) then you will have to go through an FFL

INTRAstate (within the same state) no FFL (especialy for Virginia)

INTERstate (between states) FFL required on the buyers end (at least) .

Good luck trying to get a common carrier to acceptthe shipment though.

You might find it easier to meet halfway.

The state is not that big.

Thanks to both of you all. My question was answered.  I did not realize that you could ship firearms within VA without haveing to mail it to an FFL. That is good news because now I dont have to pay the extra $20 transfer fee.

You may find that no common carrier will actually accept the shipment, but good luck trying.

And if they do accept it, they will probably insist on you using "next day" even though Ground will get it there next day inside the state. You can't use the USPS for handguns.
