While catching up on my local news, I was surprised to learn that my county has a service you can sign up for that will notify you electronically of local emergencies.  I would assume that other localities do too.

The Prince William Community Alert Network was designed to electronically notify residents of natural disasters, weather emergencies or terrorist activities through their e-mail accounts and on their cell phones, text pagers or wireless personal digital assistant devices.

In case of disaster, the system would send out text message alerts giving instructions on what to do, what not to do, where to go and who to contact, along with other pertinent information.

Knowing is half the battle.

Henrico has it. I got an email today regarding the snow we had. They send text messages for the bigger emergencies. Its neat!

Loudoun has something similar.

It is good for road closings, school closed, traffic issues etc...  They text it out to your phone.

I've been on the Fairfax list for a while.  Still get some email alerts, but removed myself from the cell-phone list.  Way too many txt msgs... was adding needless cost to my bill.

It's a great system!  I just wish that there was a way to specifically choose what type of alerts you receive.  Right now there are a couple choices, but I'd prefer something a little more specific.  For email it's not a problem... but for cell phone, I'd love to retain the disaster/terrorism alert, whilst skipping all of the wind advisories and road closures.

During SHTF all you need to know is:

Government is in charge. Government will take care of you as soon as you report to your assigned concentration camp "shelter". You will need to turn in all your firearms, food caches, and other survival gear before admittance into the "shelter" . This is for your safety.
