We hunt in Cumberland County down 45 towards Farmville. It's about 55 minutes from Midlothian to our cabin on the Appomattox. We are blessed with approx. 5000+ acres of hunting property within our group of friends and family and it is all connected. As an aside a friend of ours killed a 257 lb black bear last Saturday about 1/4 mile down river from our cabin. Where are you going to be hunting Fiend? Spence |
I will be hunting in sussex county out on reelvirginians cousins land. |

Nice buck, spence! That rack has very nice form. I shot a doe late in the afternoon around 4:40. I watched her browsing for about 1/2 hour until she got into range and presented a shot.. Rifle was a T/C percussion sidelock using musket caps. The load was 100grs of Pyrodex under a home cast 180gr lead roundball and a home cut pillow ticking patch. The shot was about 30yards from a tree stand, with a quartering away target. The shot entered just under the backstrap (whew!) and exited low and just behind the shoulder blade, turning the lungs into hash. She ran 10yards and dropped dead. Meat in the freezer! I was pleased with the terminal effects of my ancient projectile. The best part was the drag-about 200yards back to my house for butchering. :D She kept watching for something while she was browsing, which distracted me no end. From the footprints near the food plot,I suspect there's still a dominant buck around my area somewhere. |

Just got back from day 2 of hunting. Does all over me this morning from dark until 0820, came out at 10. Went back in at 12:30. One of our buddies shot a 4 pointer at 1:15 and a doe at 4:15, another buddy's wife killed a big 5 pointer, he killed a coyote. Deer are moving like crazy during the day right now, wish I had the rest of the week to hunt. If your able to hunt in central VA stay in the woods all day, they are moving with this full moon. Not as cold as Saturday. Spence |

I hunt in Brunswick County....just got home...4 guys hunting...killed 2 nice 8 points, a 6 point and 2 does. Plus one turkey. Me...well, I saw a lot of deer...but no shooter bucks and only does I saw were on the roadside grass on the way to/from my stands. Will head back down there next Tuesday for 10 more days of fun. Good luck everyone. PS. A suppressed .22, while quiet...is actually quite loud in the quiet woods. |
that is a thick deer |

Alllllright, not much action the last two times out (Tues. evening/Wed. morn) but still saw deer. The board in Cumberland is filling up with nice bucks and a bear was killed about 500 yards down the creek from us this week, exciting season so far. Anyhow, less than 48 hours til the opener of the regular season, man I'm excited. Keep the reports and such coming in and most importantly STAY SAFE, no deer is worth a person. Good luck to all and I am looking forward to seeing more pics/stories Saturday night. Fiend and any other first timers even more good luck! Got to go get my first batch of last year deer jerky off the dehydrator. Stay Safe! Spence |

Didn't get a damn thing! I had one doe run past my stand but she was running to fast for me to get a shot on, I didn't want to risk a bad shot and only wound her. Saw 6+ other deer on the run but they were 150+ yards away so they were out of the question. Next trip is out is first weekend of December, hope I get one then! |
I can't tell you how many times my heart started jumping because I heard something walking in the woods only to find out it was a FUCKING SQUIRREELLL!!!!!!!! |
You should have nailed them . . . they're good eating too. 00 Buck on Squirrels is something to see. Of course, I would have never killed all those Turkeys because I'm a really really good boy . . . even if there weren't wittnessessessess there. |

Ok I'm home fo the night and the bad news is I didn't have my digital camera so pics will come later once I can scan them. The good news is I shot a 20 inch 10 pointer. Very nice buck, we are going to European mount him. Had deer on me all day, tons of does, but a coule of bucks before this one. My buddy shot a 16.5" 8 pointer with a very nice symmetrical rack. Good day for us can't wait for Monday. Glad to see you had a good day Fiend, just seeing deer always makes me happy. And the squirrels you'll get used to, I still get fooled by them sometimes. Killed one today. Been a long, long day. Got into the woods at 5am hiked for an hour and sat until 4:30 and killed a 4 point cull buck. Wanted to wait out for a big one but my trigger finger got the best of me. I will have pics tomorrow along with a balistics report.

| I once had a chipmunk playing around in a dry creek bed behind me while I was sitting in a tree stand. I'd slowly turn around, and curse the chipmunk. Then he'd make a different sound that I'd swear was too loud for such a little critter and turn around again. Mutter-mutter chipmunk. I'd hear it again... it's probably just the chipmunk, but it really sounds different --slow turn--doggone chipmunk. Then I hear him again, I start muttering to myself about the chipmunk as I slowly turn --well I'll be, that is the largest, blackest chipmunk I have ever seen!! It was about a 150 pound black bear. And although I was deer hunting, it was bear archery season, too! Too bad he was downwind. He got to about 30 yards and bolted. Sure was more interesting than that doggone chipmunk, though. |

Forgot to take a pic but this is what happened. Parked my truck at 5am, hiked for 40 minutes to the place that I wanted to hunt. Sat at this same place until 3pm when I saw a doe walking straight at me from the 12oclock. Watched her, hopping she might have something following her. The wind was a cross wind so I knew I was good for a while. She kept getting closer to me, eating acorns as she went. I had heard gun shots all day and it was eating me up, I wanted to kill a damn deer but the drive to kill a nice buck was more overwelliming. She finally made it to my 9oclock and new something wasn't right. She stuck her nose up in the air and looked right at me. She turned and went back to direction that she came. She never did blow or raise her tail, she just knew something wasn't right. About 5 minutes went by and I blew on my grunt call. A half hour later I hear something at my 5 oclock making a lot of noise. I figured it was a squirrel so I turned a round and see this 5 point buck running right at me. He crossed within 20 yards of me stopped and and then headed straight for the spot where the doe had turned around. Now it was late and I really wanted a deer, but I stayed patient and whatched this buck start trailing the doe. I waited 2 more minutes and right when the buck was about to dash out of sight, I drilled him in the neck from 90 yards with my .270, when he fell I heard something behind me I turned to see a nice 10 pointer running away. ![]() At this point I am bummed but at the same time meat on the table! I walked over to my downed deer and pulled my knife out. I grabbed its front hoof and at that time the back leg swong around and wacked me in my leg, the deer came back to life. It started thrashing around and making a gurgling sound so I shot it again with my handgun in the neck, now it was dead. Looking at the wound from the .270 I hit right where you should aim for a neck shot, the problem was that the balistic tip upon hitting the vertabrae broke up into 2 pieces, one piece passed high and severed the muscles up hight and the other passed low and hit the severed the muscles down low and also took out the wind pipe and part of the top lobe of the lung. The handgun shot hit right behind the ear, the interesting thing about that is from 5 feet away a 180gr .40cal gold dot did not penetrate all the way through. I dug the slug out and found that the slug only partially mushroomed. Flesh clogged the hollow point causing on side to stay put and the other side expanded, but it became flat. As a result the bullet went in being .40" and when I dug it out it was .36". Anyway that is my story, next day out will be Wednesday. |
Luckily it was about 3am on my way back from work on Rte. 11, and I could swerve easily into the next lane and slow down, so I didn't make contact (heard a thunk, might have bumped the car, but no damage to car or the deer). It did stand there in front of me for a few seconds while I contemplated drawing the G27 and getting fresh venison... |
Those big Bucks are slick the way they send out the young Bucks to run interference for them! Good job VTHS and real nice work! |

Well, I blew the big one today. I shot an 8 pointer on saturday and got lazy, didn't get out to my stand until it was already pretty light out (6:15 or so). My spot was on a knoll with a truck trail on one side and a big swamp on the other. I stopped in front of the knoll, took a knee and started digging thru my bag for some Tink's and a piece of rag. There I was, out in the open, on my knee, rifle on my shoulder when I heard something behind me. Cranked my head around to see a big deer, 12 points and better than a 22" beam, huge shaggy barrel chest, sticking his head out of the thicket about 20 feet behind me. I looked at him, he looked at me, he snorted and took off. I ran over the knoll but all I saw was some motion in the thicket. Ten minutes earlier and I'd have had him. But I gotta say today and Saturday were two of the prettiest days for hunting I've seen back to back in several years. 30-40 degrees, overcast, still, just gorgeous. And this huge acorn crop combined with 10 years of quality management has produced a bunch of big racks up here. On the 500 acres where we hunt I've seen at least seven bucks that were 8 points or better in the four days I've been hunting-four 8's, two 10's and that damned 12. Great season so far. |

I will have pics tomorrow along with a balistics report.
