What is the closest that you can get to Washington DC without leaving Virginia?

How difficult is it to commute from Virginia to DC?

How dangerous are the subways?

Pretty easy, depending on what time you need to be there....

How dangerous are the subways?

Not at all. reletively clean and safe. I rode the Metro to DC for 2.5 years.

And no, you can't take your gun into DC!

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know. Guns are banned in the gleaming beacon of liberty to world.

Don't even bother setting foot in the capital of the freest nation on earth with a firearm because the police and the federalies will come down on you like a ton of bricks.

FWIW, I would say Crystal City as well, you're either coming from the Rosslyn or Pentagon City Metro stops, they both go straight into DC.

Not sure yet. I'm hearing everything from a week to a month. Not particularly excited about it either.

OK, that sounds like fun...

Oh, does anyone know where the NEA building is? Supposedly it's on Embassy Row(??), real close to the Russian embassy. Is this a decent part of town for white folks to be in after dark?

Embassy row is Fox Hall Road, IIRC. Lotta senators and other elected oinkers living there. Not TOO bad....but I try to be back accross the river before dark no matter WHAT part of DC I'm in.

NEA as in education or arts? Education is on 16th St just north of the White House. Arts is halfway between the Cap bildg and the WH

Russian embassy is on Foxhall Rd. You could buy most of Ft Worth for the price of a house in the Foxhall area, so yes it's a nice neighborhood.

Metro is very safe.

You should try to stay at the Holiday Inn  Georgetown - shouldn't be too expensive and close to Foxhall, if that's where you'll be. Good (enough) neighborhood.

And stop worrying. It's not like you're going to Detroit.

Just don't the "'French-Fry Police" (aka Metro cops) see you eating or drinking on the Metro. You'll
get cuffed & stuffed while they ignore the drug dealer over in the corner.....

I ride the green line every day between Gallery Place and Navy Yard, never had a problem. But I sure wouldn't want to ride out to Anacostia late at night...

I used to live near the Eastern Market stop on the orange/blue line back in the day when everything around Eastern Market was the hood - the conductor was like "Eastern Market - this means you white bread...I don't suggest continuing on this line."

Very few crackers even stayed on beyond Capitol South.

I fell asleep on the way home one night and woke up at the Benning Rd stop.

I once had some co-workers from Ft. Sam come up for a week.  The went out on the metro that weekend to go visit a buddy or something and got lost (they took the green line inadvertenly)....ended up passing through Anacostia and ended up in Suitland.  They said they feared for their lives every second until they realized their error and hightailed it back up to the blue line.

In case you haven't figured it out, Steve-

THERE IS NO GOOD REASON TO CROSS TO THE EASTERN BANK OF THE ANACOSTIA RIVER.  EVER.

Your odds of gettign back to Texas might decrease signifigantly if you do.
