Being not very well traveled in Virginia, my "favorite places" in addition to my comments above:
- Warrenton(?) for the Gold Cup races
- Various vinyards along Rt15 Heading North/West from Leesburg
- "Old Town" Leesburg; Walking distance for my wife and I, which we frequent on the weekends
- 2001 Virginia Wine Festival at Great Meadow in The Plains
- Williamsburg, specifically being on the James River. Also enjoy the Michelob Classic there.
- Middleburg... I just like the old homes.
- Hiking "Old Rag" Mountain... I think it's in Luray.

Hmmmm...

In no partticular order:
- Monticello
- Most of the battlefields are good.  The one I like best is Fisher's Hill, which isn't much as battlefields go but I usually have it to myself and there is a tree there that is interesting to see.  During the civil war it had all the branches cut off, was cut flat about 20 feet up and had a platform for a lookout placed on top.   It survived but is the most gnarled, twisted thing you've ever seen and it is the oldest tree known to be living in VA.
- It's not quite in VA but Harper's Ferry is interesting both for sceneray and because it was a weapons factory.
- Most of the Blueridge Parkway is good.  There are a few spots on Skyline Drive that are more scenic but on Skyline drive you've got to pay to get there, can't carry a gun and have to deal with too many other people.
- Abingdon has some fun stuff, although it usually ends up with me sitting around a lot waiting for my wife to come out of some little shop or other.
6/3/2005 11:01:37 AM EDT
[#9]
Hightown- Highland County Maply Fest
Arlington Cemetary- nuff said
Skyline Drive- fall colors, best on a bike
McDowell- Breastworks
Lake Anna - if only I had a boat
NRA museum- needs no explaination

I can't think of a full 10 places but I would add these few:

Virgina Beach

Hwy 17 from Rt 301/ Ft AP Hill through Rappahannock to Hampton Va.

Bon Air Memorial Rose Garden, Arlington Va.

The view of Washington DC/Crystal City/National Airport from Ft. Meyer

Danville VA (Virginia International Raeway)

All of the State WMA's - for hunting and hiking

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Where they make medieval armor?

Some historians consider the battle of McDowell the beginning of ``Stonewall'' Jackson's 1862 Valley Campaign, while others prefer to include First Kernstown, Stonewall's only defeat. The battle of McDowell is studied today by military historians for several reasons. At the tactical level, it can be argued that the US forces achieved a draw. Milroy's ``spoiling attack'' surprised Jackson, seized the initiative, and inflicted heavier casualties, but did not drive the Confederates from their position. Historians derive lessons about use of terrain, small unit tactics and leadership, and overexuberance under fire (12th Georgia). At the strategic level, the battle of McDowell and the resultant withdrawal of the US army was an important victory for the South. The battle demonstrated Jackson's strategy of concentrating his forces against a numerically inferior foe, while denying his enemies the chance to concentrate against him. Jackson rode the momentum of his strategic win at McDowell to victory at Front Royal (23 May) and First Winchester (25 May).

Damn!  I was hoping it was a "Hooters" the size of Willamsburg.

(Just kidding)

You appear to be a Civil War history buff.  In Pensacola Florida we had Ft. Barrancas - an old Spanish fort used as a prison during the Civil War and during the Indian Wars.  It was a very nice Civil War museum at one time.  What would be the best Civil War Museum in Virginia?

I'm not sure which is the best, but there sure are a lot of them and there are battelfields all over.

Manassas and New Market battlefields both have some decent visitor centers and museums.  There's also a decent one down near Fredericksburg.  Not Wilderness, the next one close to F-burg.  Appomatox Courthouse is a decent setup as well.

Drove by Mt. Trashmore on my way to VB for vacation.  What's up with the name?  Was it a landfill at one point?

Thats my understanding.  Landfill capped with 10-15 ft of clay now used as a family rec area.  Was pretty nice way back when.

4. Crabtree Falls
5. Virginia Museum of Transportation (In Roanoke.  The museum is not that great, but you get to climb on the trains!)
6. The Indian/American Cafe in Harrisonburg (It is run by a couple from Nepal.  I spent a month in Nepal in 2001 and this couple is a distant relative to one of the folks I stayed with (I found out later).  The food and smells bring back great memories)
