Allen will vote AGAINST the AWB amendment! "I have concluded, after a review of the evidence, that this symbolic ban of 19 firearms chosen for cosmetic reasons is a meaningless, toothless law that has virtually no impact on crime. I have decided, therefore, to vote against extension of the ‘Assault Weapons Ban.’ I am also concerned that by reauthorizing this gun ban legislation, it will serve as a platform inviting added restrictions on Second Amendment rights. The current law, then, only makes sense if the ultimate goal it is to ban more and more guns in the future, something I cannot support. This can be seen in several proposals and amendments now before Congress to expand the current assault weapons ban--proposals that permanently ban a large number of guns that citizens lawfully use for competition, hunting or self-defense. I have a long and consistent record of supporting the rights of Virginians and Americans to protect their families and themselves, and I am committed to protecting those rights of law-abiding American citizens." |

Allen, Warner Change Stances On Gun Ban Top Stories 03/02/2004 06:52:15 (Washington, DC) -- Virginia Republican Senators John Warner and George Allen are on opposite sides of the fence on a national ban of nearly 20 kinds of semiautomatic assault weapons. Warner now favors the ban, though opposed to it a decade ago. The Old Dominion's senior senator says the ban has helped cut crime sharply, while making streets safer. Allen ran four years ago on a promise to back the ban, but now calls it a toothless law with little impact on crime.< |

Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2004 19:03:58 -0500 March 1, 2004 Dear Virginia NRA Member: With a vote on S. 1805, the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act," that would halt reckless lawsuits against the gun industry, scheduled for tomorrow, you need to contact U.S. Senator George Allen and thank him for reconsidering his support for reenactment of the 1994 Clinton gun ban. Here is a portion of Senator Allen's statement opposing reenactment (or expansion) of the Clinton gun ban: "I have concluded, after a review of the evidence, that this symbolic ban of 19 firearms chosen for cosmetic reasons is a meaningless, toothless law that has virtually no impact on crime. I have decided, therefore, to vote against extension of the 'Assault Weapons Ban.' I am also concerned that by reauthorizing this gun ban legislation, it will serve as a platform inviting added restrictions on Second Amendment rights. The current law, then, only makes sense if the ultimate goal it is to ban more and more guns in the future, something I cannot support. Senator Allen demonstrated political courage and acumen in voting against this amendment. He saw the offering of this amendment for what it truly was-a brazen attempt at political gimmickry to load S. 1805 up with anti-gun amendments in the hopes of defeating the underlying measure. As he accurately surmised in his statement on this subject, "This bill is too important to be saddled with 'poison pill' amendments." As a cosponsor of S. 1805, who wants to see a "clean" bill passed without any anti-gun amendments, Senator Allen's actions are to be praised. Again, please contact Senator Allen using the contact information below to thank him for his support of S. 1805, and his opposition to the amendment to re-authorize the 1994 Clinton gun ban.
