I got a summons in the mail today. It's not like a regular jury summons. It has the name of the judge and room number. Has anyone gone through one of these?
I went through a regular jury summons for a case, but never one of these. It even came on some special heavy paper.

a grand jury is impaneled for a period of time (like 3 or 6 months) and handles all the grand jury work for the court during that time.  a regular jury only handles a single case.

you are sworn to secrecy when you go on a grand jury and can never talk about it at all usually.

I don't know what county you're in, but in Will the GJ would meet every Wednesday for 6 months.  They'd run through a couple dozen indictments every time they met and usually they were done by noon or so.  As was mentioned, you're sworn to secrecy because sometimes they issue indictments they want sealed, and sometimes the GJ is asked to authorize subpoenas for ongoing investigations that could be compromised.

According to this link, you are looking at 30 days.

I believe jurors are picked from a pool, so you stand a chance of not being picked.

A friend of mine was on a grand jury in Cook County in the early 90's.  He served for 30 days.  He wasn't happy about but in the end he said it was very interesting.
