| Hello, I live in Bureau County....Exit 56 on I-80 Princeton Illinois... I am looking for a local area gun smith, to do some work on my sniper rifle. I would like to have 2 inches taken off the barrel and have it threaded. Then add a muzzle break. The rifle is a Remington Model 700 SPS in .308. I use this rifle for duty as a Police Officer and on a Tactical Team. I would travel to the South West Burbs as I am only about 45 minutes away from Mokena and Orland Park, or maybe the Peoria area. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Tom |

I did this exact thing to my duty PSS last weekend. Took 4” off down to 22”, relieved to .625 and threaded 5/8x24.
This is an easy job and one that most smiths should be able to handle. However, it is absolutely imperative that the bore be dialed in dead nuts. The OD of the barrel is often “off” on the factory barrels. Mine was off by a lot although I didn’t measure by how much. It was very apparent while the barrel was spinning in the lathe – the bore was running true while the OD of the barrel was wobbling quite a bit. It was an eye opener for sure. The point to all of this is to make damned sure whomever you bring it to has a lot of attention to detail. I can’t give you any leads in state but if you end up shipping it out I can point you to some good guys. I’d offer to do it for you but I’m in the southern part of the state and not an FFL. |
| Thanks guys! I will check with Mark.....I may have to ship it out of state....I was hoping that there was someone! in our area that still has the skills to do the work. I can remember at the Princeton show there was a new smith that was out of Bureau, but I'll be damned if I can remember his name. Anyway...Thanks again! Be safe! |
